When we had our passport request we took them up, and you can then return in 2 weeks to collect your visas.

Passport can only be dropped off or picked up on Thursdays if I remember correctly.

You just need to prove to them that you have the funds - a bank statement, an ATM receipt (dated as near to your landing date)...etc... You don't need to bring the money with you as long as you can...
