Re: Gatineau / Ottawa Tornados

We dodged a bullet. Just. The bit of Gatineau that got trashed is about a five-minute drive.

Re: Blacktower Financial Management

And unsolicited phonecalls. I've had a few of those about pensions.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Peace at last!

The unruly puppy is at the vet being adjusted and the missus has gone to her first day at school. I can finally hear myself think.

Re: Canadian cities where minorities are the majority

Yup.

I had a conversation with a taxi driver here in Gatineau. He was banging on about immigrants. I pointed out that I am one. He was having none of it.

Nothing, of course, to do with my being...

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

It was my MIL's 80th birthday last weekend. She's a soccer nut. We took her to the Montreal/New York game. The two lagered-up young guys sitting in front of her apologised in advance that they might...

Re: The Rosie Sparkles Thread

I will confess to also developing a defective tear duct. That photo has made my day. It is beyond A-word!

Things looked bleak at the beginning. Now look at at. I cannot even begin to imagine how...

Re: Truck driving courses ?

Perhaps worth bearing in mind that there is a growing shortage of truck drivers and it's going to get worse. The existing drivers are getting older and young people don't seem to want to get into it....

Re: Refugees from the USA

I do not disagree with you. Except on one point. It's something I noticed when I lived in Oakville. Rampant racism, from Brit immigrants.

For a while, I really hoped that my stepson would find...

Re: Refugees from the USA

I am gobsmacked at the amount of racist bile in this discussion!

Yes, some people are jumping the border into Quebec. They don't have much choice. A few might be crooks. Most are not. They are...

Re: Buck a beer?

$1.25 is what you pay in a supermarket here. I believe that's the lowest price allowed in QC. That is probably why Walmart doesn't sell beer. It can't undercut the competition.

Re: Are our expectaions too high - Contractors

Depends on the client-contractor relationship. I've had some good trade contractors and some crap ones.

In my job, I'm essentially a contractor. With existing and trusted clients, I can quote a...

Re: Us goods and travel boycott

We have long tended to buy local/Canadian stuff wherever possible. That will not change. Souvette now pays close attention to labels on produce. Very close attention.

The tariffs are bizarre.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Anywhere east of Vanier is mainly Franco. Oddly, when you cross into QC, it becomes rather Anglo again. We went into downtown Rigaud for lunch during a trip a few years ago. I heard more English than...

Re: Notarized translation

I suggest you get in contact with the Consular Department at the German Embassy in Ottawa or the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. They must have been through this many times, so I'm sure they know which...

Re: Gang Shootings Toronto Rant

Health Canada approves cigarettes? I somehow doubt that.

We do not buy from the reserves. We go to Costco. Law-abiding citizens and all that.

Re: Gang Shootings Toronto Rant

Were you buying US Marlboro or the Canadian spoiler version? Buying dodgy smokes is getting iffy, apparently. One can, allegedly, buy a carton for $20 on certain reservations but you're stuffed if...

Re: Expert UK income/Canada Accountant recommendation please

I feel your pain. The foreign income issue is a nightmare and I keep a bloody close eye on the form when my accountant does my tax return. I've been audited a couple of times because of the foreign...

Re: Moving to Ottawa

Try going to Saguenay! Inpenetrable accent and far too many fingers for the headcount.

Souvette seems convinced that her brother's three kids are Quebecois. They are not. They were all born and...

Re: Moving to Ottawa

I believe that bilingualism is mandatory in Ottawa's hospitals, although the Montfort hospital is largely franco.

Most of the original settlers came from Normandy and brought their language with...

Re: Moving to Ottawa

I live in Quebec and even I struggle with the accent. My wife, who is from Quebec struggles with some Quebec accents.

The Ottawa Valley accent is particularly horrible (both English and French).

Re: Long weekend.

No. It's a real spa. About six feet in diameter. It's inflatable, so we can empty it and pack it away in winter.

Re: Long weekend.

I'm mostly hiding in my air conditioned house. It's brutally hot and humid outside and we have more of this to come. Souvette is mostly slumped in the outdoor spa we put up yesterday.

Re: Married or not?

We are unusual on our street in that we are married. We were not going to bother but our lawyer basically told us to. Common law has no legal standing in Quebec and we both have kids that were living...

Re: Student moving to Montreal - how essential is conversational French?

You'll be fine. UM might be franco but I imagine that just about everyone will speak English. A South African colleague of mine did some of his PhD at McGill. He absolutely loved it.
