Re: Canada might be getting 10 days paid sick leave

Even without a Provincial mandate, I know that some larger employers (such as mine) have increased the paid sick-leave entitlement due to the WuFlu.
We now get 10 days and, predictably, folk are...

Re: A Handy Guide to Measuring in Canada

When I lived in Mexico, the US influence was also strong. In construction, there was much use of the 'metric inch' (25mm); a piece of lumber measuring 50x100mm was, invariably, 'un dos por cuatro'.

Re: Citizenship Test

I have my test & ceremony coming up in a few days, in Edmonton. I chatted with a few colleagues about the process, passing on some of the 'typical' questions. All I got was blank looks at "Who was...

Re: Drivers, horns and road rage.

I've just been in Houston, TX for 2 weeks - never seen so many angry black women driving bigass SUVs, throwing cups of water at other vehicles.

Re: Credit checks for apartment rental in Vancouver

I work for one of the major apartment owner/operators and have to review all new applications. I have three questions in mind; I look for answers from the following:
* Can they pay the rent? (Bank...

Re: Tenants Contents/liability insurance

Thumbs-up for Zipsure! I had them in NS - just $15/mth.

ADVICE - I STRONGLY recommend, as someone who works in property rentals, that you get tenant's insurance. If you live on a lower floor and a...

Re: UK getting a Mexican Temporary Residency Visa

My application for Mexican citizenship took almost a year to process - had to take an exam in another city.

Re: Nova Scotia vs Calgary

Have lived in NS and AB so can comment:
Good NS
* Cheap housing but gasoline is more expensive.
* Halifax - decently sized city with good shopping & amenities (even Ikea is finally going there!)...

Re: Feeling sad/homesick after 11 years

I went back to the UK just recently - first time in 15 years - for a 2-week vacation.
Crowded, cramped, dirty, noisy, smelly, expensive - and that was just the Gatwick arrivals hall!

Re: Looking to work in nova scotia

I second what dbd33 says.

The Maritimes is not a great place for employment opportunities - I was in Halifax for 2 years, just above minimum wage ($11/hr). There's lots of grunt work but you'd...

Re: Mexico vs UK - wanting to marry and live together

OK - I don't think it's changed much since I did it - you're Brit & she's Mexi.

Get married in Mexico - you don't say which state (they have different requirements) and this could be important....

Re: Job/address query. re- Background Declaration.

If the application tells you to list all jobs and addresses since age 18, then why do you think it becomes unnecessary simply because you 'cannot give accurate dates'?

Fudge if necessary, as long...

Re: British, Arrogant? Qui moi?

Mind you, most Canucks seem to have no idea of the hoops a potential immigrant has to jump through either.

Plenty of times, I've heard folk bang on about, "these frikken' immigrants, eh?" in the...

Re: Moving to Edmonton canada

I must have a half-dozen resumes from laid-off oil-patch workers every day these last few weeks. But what use is a 20-year floorhand/roughneck/tool-puller to me in residential maintenance?

I see...

Re: Moving Furnture From UK To Mexico

Buy new.
It cost us around $3000 to ship from Felixstowe to Altamira (which is in Tamaulipas, BTW - it's the container side of the Port of Tampico). As the mrs was Mexican we avoided import duties...

Compared to where we were and the situation we had in Mexico - absolutely yes!

Too bad it took so long but if I knew then what I know now I might not have bothered.

Re: That's Me Done With NS!

No sense of entitlement from THIS British Expat :p

After 2 months here, with three solid interviews from around 60 applications, all had come to naught. I dumbed down my resume and took a job at...

Re: That's Me Done With NS!

Indeed - but there are some fundamental issues to be addressed.

1. Bluenosers and Newfies seem, to my cosmopolitan upbringing, to be cautiously conservative. This shows in their attitude to...

That's Me Done With NS!

Yup - as much as I have grown to love Halifax, there just isn't the range of employment opportunities for the generalist, such as I. Two years of grunt work at close to minimum wage but opportunity...

Re: Nova Scotia is sucking the life out of me!

I'll jump in with 2c worth here, after 18 months in Halifax.

Yes, there is work in NS - but a lot of it is 'grunt work' in the service sectors that pays just above minimum wage. The prevailing...
