Thanks to all for the responses. After chatting to my better half we are now flying direct to Birmingham with Emirates for $1600 more. She assures me it will be worth it.

We're living in a large two bed apartment in Epping which is on the same train line as Concord. Takes about 10-15 minutes. Rent is $450 a week. Suits us fine.
