We plan on being in the USA for just under 6 months over the winter (we have B2 visas and own a condo there). I know the US CBP have a "rule of thumb" here ...

Sorry I really can't remember a W-9 or a W-8BEN. The forms I did fill in were all done there and then in the bank. And there was nothing onerous in any of them.

I'm a UK citizen and I opened a Bank of America account. I just walked into the bank with my UK passport and a couple of US utility bills. Account was opened in about 10 minutes. No problems.
