Yes, and there are things that are said in the US that are perfectly acceptable but would not be anywhere else. Speaking what is considered to be the same language does not mean dialect differences...

To be honest I think you have done the right thing by going along with the punishment if that is the school policy.

However, if I were you I wouldn't leave it there. It certainly wouldn't hurt...
