Re: Question for Former Lancastrian

Well, yes, that's what I used to think but it seems that presenting my Canadian passport is actually causing me more hassle.

Re: Question for Former Lancastrian

Thanks. I value my Canadian passport. I guess what I really meant to ask is what’s the point of even presenting the Canadian passport first? Seems like I should just present the US passport first...

Question for Former Lancastrian

I have Canadian and US passports. The last few times I have driven into Canada, I presented my Canadian passport to the immigration officer. Each time I was asked where I lived (Maryland) and then...

Re: Moving from the UK advice please

You might find this at least moderately useful: Toronto Neighbourhoods (http://www.torontoneighbourhoods.net/)

If you can't be somewhere closer to the city (High Park and Cabbagetown were a couple...

Re: Study permit denied

Absolutely. Keeping bank and credit card accounts open is a must. Leaving a car or a pet with a family member is a good idea. My point was that home ownership and a job to return to (the 2 things you...

Re: Study permit denied

Family (including parents) is definitely a tie - it's probably the only tie that most students have. Yes, owning a home and having a job to return to helps - but the vast majority of students are not...

Re: Mobile phone plan for student

Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking about having my daughter use her own phone (unlocked iPhone) with a Koodo Prepaid plan. Does anyone know if she can simply swap SIM cards? That is, use the same...

Mobile phone plan for student

I live in the US. My daughter is going to be attending the University of Toronto in September. Using her US phone in Canada isn't economically viable - it would cost US$150 a month on top of the US...

Re: Triple citizenship (UK/Aus./Can.): any issues?

Not necessary if the parent was born on the island of Ireland on or before Dec 31st 2004 - in which case, any children are automatically Irish citizens regardless of where they were born.

Re: So when does it "get better"

There's no one-size-fits-all formula. As others have said, it might never feel like home. Home is a state of mind so it won't ever be home unless you decide that it is. For me, Ireland is the closest...

Re: Dual citizenship passport requirements

She needs a Canadian passport if she wants to fly to Canada but she could actually fly to the US on a British passport and then enter Canada at a land crossing with the British passport.

Re: Applying for UK passport renewal in Canada.

Apply now. My daughter (who lives in London, ON) just recently got her new British passport in 2 weeks from start to finish. Hers wasn't even a renewal - it was treated as a first time application...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

In Maryland, you have to show proof of SSN for driver license renewal. It doesn't have to be the actual card though e.g. can be a W2.

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

No - you need to take your passport into a SSA office and have them update your record. I became a US citizen in 2006. They probably told me about the need to update the SSA but it must have gone in...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

Yes - and it's cheap and easy to carry. But it can be used to travel internationally at land and sea ports of entry to/from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and The Caribbean. It can be used as ID on domestic...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

Not on its own - you'd still need a photo ID. And who wants to carry their SSN card around anyway? A US passport card is cheap and easy to carry.

You make a good point. It's very important to...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

I didn't feel comfortable carrying mine around all the time. For short trips, I kept mine safely hidden at home and carried a photocopy with me (in the days before smartphones). I took the actual...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

Although often accepted as proof of US citizenship, a US birth cert is not actually definitive proof of US citizenship. Children born in the US of foreign diplomats can get US birth certs but they...

Re: Has anyone been stopped and asked to see their Green Card?

It's more likely to happen in the states bordering Mexico and Canada. My neighbor, a US citizen, was stopped a few months ago in Vermont. He was asked for proof of US citizenship but didn't have his...

Isn't that for Transfer of Residence? I'm not moving to the UK. I'm just shipping something to my brother who lives there.
