The UK banks are asking foreign residents for details of their local tax identification number - it is possible the OP's details have been passed to the ATO by the banks in the UK.

Permanent residency and no tax on worldwide income - that's also a wrong assertion.

I can't say - I only have experience of the UK tax software package which we use as a tax practice, which of course does allow us to submit the required details for our clients.

Unfortunately the ATO considers that applicable fund earnings are no longer to be calculated this way.

Using your example the taxable amount would be £5k x 1.9, or A$9,500.
