Re: Driving UK-Germany recently?

Thanks all. In the end we decided that it's easiest for her to fly. Irritating, as it take almost as long, door to door, to get there by air as to drive (due to the very, very few UK/DE flights, and...

Re: Driving UK-Germany recently?

Re coming back - tests, home quarantine and more tests are required, from all those countries, which we have factored into the plan already.
Ferries over - there are very few options for skipping...

Re: Driving UK-Germany recently?

Aagghh... I hadn't thought of that. Do you mean that even if you don't step outside your car, and are only in France for about 30 minutes and 50km, you still have to quarantine in Germany? I know...

Re: Driving UK-Germany recently?

Thanks. Actually, this will shortly be no longer correct, as Germany recently removed the UK from its quarantine list. All the countries are changing their rules regularly, hence why I was asking...

Driving UK-Germany recently?

Hi, has anyone driven to/from UK/Germany recently (ie in the past few weeks, up to a month perhaps)? My wife (German passport, permanently settled in the UK) might need to do a dash across to deal...

Re: Multiple packages per family + Primary Teacher packages

I don't know why people keep posting answers about which they clearly know nothing. Of course it is possible to get both these sets of allowances if they are paid direct to you (and your wife) as...

Re: Passport Renewal

Surely your old visa would have been cancelled when your last contract finished? If they terminated your employment at the end of the last contract then they should also have terminated the visa.

Re: Buying & registering a Boat in Abu Dhabi

You cannot complete the purchase of the boat till you get the security clearance done, and that usually takes at least 3-4 weeks. You also need the licence before you can register the boat to you....

Re: How far will this get me in Abu Dhabi?

You need to state the value of the allowances, especially the accommodation. For some local companies the base salary might only be 40% of what you get monthly - they will load the allowances,...

Re: Abu Dhabi question about leaving family in UK

Many people do exactly what you describe, and it works out for some, not for others - it all depends on you, & your family, & all sorts of personal and professional factors. Commuting to/from the UK...

Re: Moving to Abu Dhabi... single guy issues

I know lots of people who have stayed for ages in hotel-run serviced apartments (eg Park Rotana, one of the Reem Island hotels [can't remember its name] etc). I don't know what they pay, but you can...

Re: car registration renewal

You do the testing as usual, at a testing centre (or get someone to take it there for you), once it passes "the system" (online) knows this. AFAIK the test is valid for 30 days only (or maybe 2...

Re: car registration renewal

It is not backdated if you do it before the 30 days grace period is up, and it is nothing to do with who you deal with - in fact I am not sure why you are dealing with a person at all, as it was...

Re: car registration renewal

So you only waste time and money doing it once every 13 months - unless you enjoy the fun of doing it every 12 months.

Re: car registration renewal

Wow, I never realised it was so confusing. Actually, it's not! Your insurance is valid for 13 months. Registration is valid for 12 months, with another month before they worry, so just assume it is...

Re: Car impounding

In Abu Dhabi (no idea whether it is the same in Dubai) one can ask to pay a fine in lieu of being impounded. A colleague did this a year or so ago - they checked his record, saw that it was a first...

"it will be very thorough and tome consuming." Nonsense, for the first half, and correct for the second - these checks are not remotely thorough. If you are coming from overseas they have almost no...

Re: Exporting a car to the EU

A friend of mine did this a few years ago - a Mercedes convertible, with not much resale value here, but plenty of life left in it (he reckoned). He found a specialist car-import company in the...

Re: Compound advice for Abu Dhabi

Al Karamah Compounds (A & B, under different management) are in your price bracket, small gardens, very family oriented. I'd guess about 10 mins drive to BSAK in school hours. Al Dhafra compound next...

You'd be better off posting this question in one of the ME general discussion forums - this one is mostly about jobs, employers, salaries etc, rather than general possibilities for living.
However,...
