Just to update you, I spoke to Nationwide Building Society and they said it was no problem (and free) for them to provide a financial references - however, they said that whoever needs the reference...

Thanks for the responses guys. I just got my reports from both experian and equifax (can't seem to get one from call credit but apparently they are fairly irrelevant anyway)

Thanks all for your comments so far.

Clearly I've got to rethink our gas spending. Although in Santa Monica, it is not impossible to do everything on foot or on my bike.

I think there are plenty of places to walk to in the area we will live, so I won't need to drive too much but yes, I'm sure miles rack up - compared to the UK where everything is local!
