Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Yes but at least with a car you get a mechanic to check it over before you buy it and it gets regular WOF inspections. You should look at those links I posted about electrical fires to see what can...

Re: Work Culture in NZ

Ditto, except with me I left the country because there weren't many other employers I could go to. Every other country I've worked in does things more or less the same but in NZ does it its own way....

Re: Storm

What you really need for an earthquake is a caravan or mobile home, with a gas cooker, well stocked larder and a few large drums of water in it.

Re: To those people missing Blighty or thinking of a return......

New Zealand is still struggling to recover from recession just like Britain, both countries have put up VAT / GST but at least Britain hasn't got VAT on food.

Re: Storm

True, that's probably why there are so many Kiwis in Australia.

Re: Storm

But that isn't much good if you can't use your toilet or your pillings have moved.

Problem with NZ is that it's full of Kiwis (Australia is too!) it has electricity, which is great if...

Re: Storm

Thanks, that's why I sussed it out before I left. That's the beauty of Australia for me though - plenty to chose from, lots of different jobs, no requirement to have "kiwi experience" to get work....

Re: With less than 2 weeks to go, what a kick in the knackers!!!

Aw that sucks, it's even worse in NZ. Kiwis have a bit of a rep for adding on bits to their houses without getting consent. Just letting you know so you don't get caught out on the other side, being...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Oh that explains it, your house probably doesn't have a semi permeable membrane in the walls. A lot of the older houses have the equivalent of a plastic bag as a liner - it doesn't allow the house to...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Genesis, I didn't say it was leaking, I said it was sweating. It's A bit like wearing a plastic mac on a rainy day - you get wet regardless. Try improving your ventilation if you've got problems...

Re: To those people missing Blighty or thinking of a return......

er, that was my point.

Of course the choice of an alternative country is obvious, well to some of us that is.

Re: To those people missing Blighty or thinking of a return......

And what of the industrial action taking place in NZ at the moment? teachers, radiologists, lab workers, junior doctors....? it's just the same as Britain. Go from either country to the other and...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

But if your house isn't damp why do you need dehumidifiers? Water from driers, cookers, washing etc. can be easily got rid of by opening a window or switching on an extractor fan. It sounds to me...

Re: To those people missing Blighty or thinking of a return......

Yeah so where does it say that NZ is any better?

Even after 15 years it doesn't get much better

If this is true for teachers I'm sure it isn't that different for people in other...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Perhaps your house is so damp because it has no ventilation?

Re: Storm

er, yes I have, a few years ago I was there for 6 months and I loved it, had the time of my life. God knows what made me think that NZ would be the same - big mistake  ah well we live and...

Re: move to NZ

Yeah, it could be if they've got no support network and no family. Surely you can find somewhere nearer to home if you're so desperate to get out of the UK? I know its not great here but NZ isn't...

Re: Work Culture in NZ

But I asked what sort of reaction you get when you make the suggestions. Do they nod sagely and say "yes, we need to do this" and then do nothing, or do they actually get on and do something and...

Re: Storm

Yes but in Britain the houses are built to withstand the weather and there's no way that power would be allowed to be out for so long to so many people - there'd be rioting in the streets

I...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Of course it's the house! I'm sitting here in a (brick) twin walled house with a family of five living in it and the dehumidifier we had in NZ is still sitting in the garage in its packaging because...

Re: dentifying a leaky house without a survey? for rental purposes

Just watch your power bills, those things aren't cheap to run and there was a scare with them back here in the UK a few years ago - fire risk apparently. I'd be wary buying any electrical equipment...

Heck YES!! I wish I'd never heard of the feckless place  biggest mistake of my life moving there, cost me thousands it did. Fortunately I managed to suss out Australia before I came back to...
