Re: UK state pension for Brit Expats living in Canada

If you Google it, you’ll find you need to have been working in the UK immediately before leaving and you’ve previously lived in the UK for at least 3 years in a row or paid three years contributions....

Re: Expired UK Visa - do I need it to go on vacation to UK?

I understand that the UK is proposing to have a similar rule to Canada in that a citizen would have to have a valid passport to enter but as far as I know, that’s not the case at present. I have a...

Re: UK state pension for Brit Expats living in Canada

We’ve also phoned them (using Skype) and found them extremely informative and helpful. After things were set up, they corresponded by mail.

Re: UK state pension for Brit Expats living in Canada

They did in our case. Once CRA stamp that form, and you send it to HMRC, they accept that you will declare in Canada and pay taxes here. We did it 10 years ago - it takes a few weeks but worked...

Re: UK state pension for Brit Expats living in Canada

I did see a similar comment recently - know not where but there were thought to be certain conditions. Well worth checking out though.

Re: UK state pension for Brit Expats living in Canada

Have you investigated whether it’s worth your making additional NI contributions before you retire? If you’re eligible, it’s about £160pa and you can usually contribute about 6 years worth....

Re: UK passports renewal (while in canada)

Just a comment for anyone else - it’s worth doing a few home photos, rather than just the one you mentioned. The site tells you the reason for rejection - too dark, or not the right colour behind -...

Re: UK passports renewal (while in canada)

Yes - do it online. You can even take your own photo at home - follow the guidelines they give you and get someone else to take the photo - selfies not recommended. When you’re asked on the online...

Re: Citizenship Oath

I can’t see why Canada would be interested in seeing your PR card as you leave? Obviously required to travel back. I’ve been a citizen for a while but I’m sure I didn’t have to show it to travel out...

Re: Landing in Canada but NOT activating COPR?

Thanks for that clarification- I hadn’t checked thoroughly recently but what you’ve said makes sense - I was mixing up two situations.

Re: Landing in Canada but NOT activating COPR?

Wow! How lucky you’ve been that someone with the relevant experience has picked up on this and advised you. I’m just surprised it wasn’t made clear through the documentation etc that you’ve received...

Re: Transfering money from Canada to UK

Exactly what doesn’t seem right? Does the bank know you’ll not be in Canada when the money reaches your account?
If so, do you know what you then need to do to transfer the money? Usually there’s a...

Re: Getting ready to leave the UK and move to Canada

We did this a couple of years ago - as Pulaski says, you don’t need to do something before you leave and you can go back about 6 years. If you’re eligible for Class 2 contributions, as we were,...

Re: Getting ready to leave the UK and move to Canada

Yes - that was my thinking. There are tax implications for us, for example - we still have a house in the UK after 10 years and there will be Canadian tax implications when we sell, based against the...

Re: Getting ready to leave the UK and move to Canada

Wow! Thanks a very comprehensive list.
One thing that I thought of recently - couldn’t see it on list but it may not be relevant - is to get a valuation of your house, if you own it, at the time...

Re: UK passports renewal (while in canada)

I renewed mine last year - I send colour copies of my Canadian passport rather than the document itself. I don’t know about sending both together - the system sends you updates via email or text so...

Re: British citizen but born in Germany, want to move to UK

Might be best to settle on what you think you want to do first and apply to see what they say. It’s quite a specific question for this forum and one where others are unlikely to have direct...

Re: Moving back to scotland

Largs is lovely - we lived just south of there for 6 years and it was a regular weekend outing. The ferry over to Cumbrae was always an exciting afternoon for our kids. Have you watched the recent...

Re: Moving to Calgary from UK - Tax calculations

I think your first step is to look at P85 - that officially tells the HMRC that you’re leaving the UK. It’s a while since I’ve done it so I can’t remember all the details. Things get a bit more...

Re: PR outside of Canada

My understanding, not due to personal experience but from reading this forum, is that if you are with your spouse, who is a Canadian citizen, then your PR status is maintained. Have you checked the...

Re: ArriveCAN

I presumed that was the intent because they now have all the machines at Terminal 1 too so there shouldn’t be the need for the paper - you just flash your QR code instead. I arrived back in July 2020...

Re: British Passport Renewal

Has that changed recently? I renewed mine last year from Canada - sent off colour copies of the relevant pages of my Canadian one - although I’m not sure they’ll know if not. Possibly you have to...
