Re: Any bedsits or small flats to let around or in melboure?

You would be looking at $200- $300 (or even more depending on what you want) per week.

Gumtree website and adverts in shops are also good for private ads.

If you applied through a real estate...

Re: 457 de facto advice please!

I got my gf in as a defacto. We hadn't lived together before Aus so she came on a Working Holiday Visa, we lived together for a year then I had her put on the next 457 of mine. That was relatively...

Re: Getting a PhD

Most PhDs are funded in some shape or form. Find the staff pages on the University website, find the academics who have similar interests to yours then get in contact. Ask if they have research...

Re: Help with going to an Australian University from the UK!

You would have to check with the university and scholarship what the actual conditions are, it depends on who is giving out the money and what strings they attach. Your best bet would be to contact...

Re: Help with going to an Australian University from the UK!

Hi, in most cases here the department decides who gets grants, or at least has the knowledge where you should look. If you spoke to the admissions office of a university they may not know as much.

Re: Help with going to an Australian University from the UK!

I'd start by looking on the webpages for the different universities here and see if there's anything that looks good. Scholarships tend to be handled at the department level - so you would have to...

Re: Dangerous Australian Foods

They sound nice. I've crunched my way through coffee beans before - we were given a small freebie bag of them but we don't have a grinder. Yeah, bring on the palpitations!

Re: Tasmania

I liked Hobart, it's quite compact compared to some of the other cities in Oz. I took my pushbike to Tassie on the ferry. Hobart has bike tracks converted from rail. Great for getting around

A lot...

Re: Residence requirement for Australian Citizenship

Something I've just remembered. In addition to the 4 year residency requirement there's also a 90 day one:

"absences from Australia of no more than 12 months in total in the 4 years prior to...

Re: Residence requirement for Australian Citizenship

I've always read it to be one has to have been here for four years on the right visas, and it is allowed for that person to have been abroad for up to a year in that period - so somebody can go away...

Re: Banning Bullbars the GTR09 Regulations

It's a shame that they can't ban vehicles for entering metro areas with them and let people have them outside in the rural areas.

In Melbourne there are d**kheads who fly across pedestrian...

Re: Crappiest place in America you've visited

Wow, I always thought that the US stretched the meaning of 'city' but calling a place with 25 people one really is taking the P. It's amusing how accurate the census is - 24 whites and 1 asian. Do...

Re: Melbourne - what's good and what's bad?

Jan/Feb 2008 was bad for flies - think they were desperate due to the drought. I'd cycle to work through a park and have a whole swarm trying to follow me. Still, easiest way to get rid of them was...

Re: Melbourne - what's good and what's bad?

You might wish to consider around Oakleigh in the South East. It has a busy town centre, coffee shops, train station, and around 30 mins from the sea - if you don't mind driving 15 minutes longer....

Re: Melbourne - what's good and what's bad?

I'm not talking about the shops themselves, it's the malls they can be in. Have you ever been to the shopping mecca of Brandon Park?

Re: Is it worth giving up 25 or more days paid holiday in the UK?

I think it depends on where you are as well. I get 20 days down under (I'm joining in because I'm thinking of taking a job in the States) and I don't feel the need to take so many holidays compared...
