Re: It's time to leave

Good luck to you. We will be off too - don't know where, or even when, but I'm pretty certain that I'm not going to end up here.

Re: Cost of living.

I'm pretty sure you have to declare a pocketful of Krugers. But why would you want to do that anyway?

Re: Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

Simonsi, you are a naughty, naughty fellow.

Genesis' point was very clear and simple. It was that the higher OCR in NZ means that banks charge higher interest rates on home loans.

Higher...

Whether we see 1.70 this year depends (I think) on the following:

Factors...

Re: How far do your NZ wages stretch?

Back in 2008 we (family with 2 kids) had before-tax household income of $52K, including WFF tax credits: that meant disposable income of about $45K.

The weekly grocery spend was $170, including a...

Re: How far do your NZ wages stretch?

$70,300 after tax seems quite a lot for a median household income. What's the basis for that figure I wonder?

Re: Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

Hold up folks. We are not talking value for money here, but the financial feasability of purchasing a house in the UK versus purchasing a house in NZ. There are only three relevant criteria I can...

Re: Cost of living.

Yes - 2 kids and on the same, but we do have to watch the pennies and we don't get much in the way of luxury consumables which (in my experience) cost more here.

Re: Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

You are of course right that all potential immigrants should do their due dilligence, so to speak, but I think the point needs to be made for a number of reasons.

1. Some immigrants don't.
2. it...

Re: Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

True (I live in a brick-clad house and am informed that in the event of an earthquake the cladding will fall outwards) but I think the reason for the comparive unaffordability of NZ houses is the...

Affordability of houses: NZ v UK

Re: Cost of living.

According to Google;

Average rent UK: GBP 712 per month.

Average rent NZ: NZD 260 per week (or GBP 130)

So, NZ a bit less.

So when one takes into account NZ/UK comparative earnings,...
