Re: Groceries

Interesting. Might do that. Trouble is the Mrs broke her arm a few weeks ago so I am designated driver for the whole trip. But a bottle to take away works :-)
Doubtless will be near your backyard at...

Re: Summer plans

And there was me thinking you were older than me... Happy Birthday for whenever. I passed that milestone last year.

We're coming over to your part of the world, avec enfants (cos ours are...

Re: Groceries

We're heading over to your part of the world early next week for a few weeks holiday. The Uk grocery shopping experience and consumption of cheesy comestibles is very much on our vacation to do list!...

Re: Costco - worth the hype?

Similar experience here. A new Sobeys store opened nearby a couple of years back which is their latest design. Lots of fresh fruit and veg, big deli area and huge bakery. Not so much canned and dry...

Re: Costco - worth the hype?

Costco is not always cheaper but, here at least is a source of decent beef - better than loblaws/sobeys and good fruit and veg. Ymmv if you are not at the end of a long supply chain like we are here....

Re: Boeing 737 Max 8

It’s not even an order but, rather an option to buy I think. So, if events dictate, I’m sure IAG can revise or cancel. One does rather imagine that they were able to secure a very good price!

Re: Cost-effective Shipping in Canada????

Logistics are expensive outside major population centres in Canada. You may have noticed that it’s a big country with a small population! Try living on an island where everything has to come via sea...

Re: UK NHS vs Alberta Health Service - Which one is best?

I can't comment on the health service in Alberta but suspect, as in most places, it's a factor of where you are, how it's run and funded and can be hit or miss just like the NHS. In my part of Canada...

Re: Beer pricing oddity

"'Tis the Screech my son!" I drink Old Sam occasionally. Screech, not so much.

The NLC has a bottling business. They bottle Dan Ackroyd's Crystal Head Vodka here as well.

Re: Beer pricing oddity

Alcohol distribution is a provincial monopoly. NLC is both regulator - so sets the prices - and retailer. I think there is some convoluted argument about pricing and managing consumption but really...

Re: Beer pricing oddity

Indeed. That's why I'm happy to drink it vs. Canadian equivalents. The Germans do lager rather well.

Beer pricing oddity

This might be a Newfoundland Liquor Corp only oddity but all of the European beer is priced so much cheaper than Canadian. For example - and doubtless prices are lower elsewhere in Canada, we pay...

Re: Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

Just started watching “Das Boot” on CBC Gem. Based on the books and the 1981 move/tv series. First sight it’s very good. Captures the claustrophobia and squalor of a submarine well and has enough...

Re: Good Bread in Canada???

Perhaps I'm assimilated, or perhaps I'm fortunate in my choice of bakers but I don't find sourcing "decent" bread to be a problem here. Daily Bread comes from a local bakery who do a passable 90%...

Re: Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

If you have the Crave+HBO option then its on Crave. Otherwise it can probably be found on Watch Series or some such other streaming website.

Re: Moving to Canada is like.......(insert here)

Is your flavour of Xplornet, Satellite or some sort of cellular/wifi? Satellite is subject to rain degradation - all those rain drops get in the way of the RF signal. Higher end mobile satellite...

Re: Boeing 737 Max 8

AC's customer service frequently fails to impress... :-)

In this instance, you are being offered a routing via LHR because the direct Toronto-Shannon flight is suspended due to the MAX grounding....

Re: Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

It is utterly absorbing and utterly terrifying tv. A horror story with no monsters or zombies, but the click of a geiger counter. Best thing I've watched or will watch all year I suspect.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Here, Cod is fish. Fish is cod.
Personally, I like a nice wing of skate but have to save that for when back in UK.

Re: Best Pay As You Go mobile service - Nova Scotia

Have you purchased a used car/boat/rv/motorcycle yet in Canada? I fear you are in for a shock on the application of sales tax everytime something you need to register is sold....

Imagine Canada Post delivering to your door instead of a community mailbox? That'd be an innovation.
