Re: Opening a UK investment account.

My understanding is that you can keep existing accounts once you’ve moved, but can’t open a new account as a non-UK resident. And there are restrictions on existing accounts - I don’t think you can...

Re: Moving back home but 18 year old refusing .

I’ve obviously missed something in this thread? Scilly usually gives helpful advice.
I feel for you, OP, in this situation - we’re a split family across the Atlantic, with daughter returned to the...

Re: Moving back home but 18 year old refusing .

Gosh - we lived near Cheltenham - I know it’s technically north of London but I’m not sure I’d have ever described it that way!

Re: Making a will in Canada

I think there was a similar thread a few months ago and I don’t think there was a conclusive answer. We had our wills redone here in Canada a few years ago - been here 10 years, still have property...

Re: Compassionate Leave COVID

I’ve recently read elsewhere an account of someone returning to Canada from the UK and they too reported they couldn’t get a boarding pass on their phone in the usual way. All was well once they got...

Re: Compassionate Leave COVID

I happened to randomly come across your story a while ago and thought it really summed up the frustrations and agonies of families these days, made all the worse by the distances involved. I’m so...

Re: Permit help

Depending on her interests, ambition etc, a third option could be volunteer opportunities. For some uni or college courses, or careers after that, it could have some positive benefits. For example, I...

Re: Permit help

Is it still the case that on a work permit, she would be classed as an international student? So fees would be higher for her than if you had PR?

Re: Driving in the UK with a Canadian licence

It’s an issue that’s just changed over the last few years. Up until about five years ago, I could get added to my brother’s car insurance for a small supplement. That then changed for his company,...

I’ve just read this thread and really do feel for you and your situation.

Re: Application to pay voluntary NICs abroad

I don’t think you’ll have any issue. We left the UK in 2010, still have a house there, rented out, and only went through the stages of applying for top up Class 2 contributions this year. We found...

Re: Tax Advice

Two comments - we filled in the P85, get pensions paid in the UK along with house rental, all into UK bank accounts, all fully declared to CRA and don’t pay tax in the UK.

Have you tried speaking...

Re: how to start paying tax in Canada?

If you check the gov.uk site, under Tax if you leave the UK, it says to complete a P85 form or send your self assessment tax return by post, if you normally complete one, for example if you’re self...

Re: how to start paying tax in Canada?

Have you already completed and submitted a P85 form to HMRC? That tells them that you’re leaving the UK and will no longer be paying tax in the UK.

Re: Partner and family moving to Canada

Just one point which you may well have covered - if you’re planning to get married in England or Wales, I think you both have to be present there to apply? Friends and family had issues with this...

Re: Renting UK House

Lots of people do it, lots decide it’s easier to sell up before moving. There are tax implications if you stay in Canada and sell at a later date, but that is balanced against the peace of mind of...

Re: Virtual Citizenship Ceremony

I didn’t even think about the additional complexities involved at present, just wanted to highlight the buffer needed as it nearly caught me out! Good luck - you’ve obviously got it covered.

Re: Virtual Citizenship Ceremony

You’ll need a Canadian passport to return so make sure you don’t book your flight too close to the ceremony. It takes up to 48 hours for you to be in the system and then a certain amount of days for...

Re: Canada financially am I doing it right.

Two things jump out to me - we also have UK pensions and UK rental income but don’t pay tax in the UK on them - it’s set up so HMRC know that we declare them to CRA and pay the relevant taxes.
I...

Re: Pension Options

I spoke to them in early March but didn’t receive letter until late May so It took approx 3 months and I can’t imagine things have speeded up rapidly since then.
