Re: Shall we start a cheese war?

I'm partial to Snowdonia Black Bomber aged cheddar but it costs $10 for 200g so it's an occasional treat.

When I moved to the UK I was surprised by the lower price, quality and selection of...

Re: Conflicted

How warm and dry do you like it? For the past few summers at least central BC gets so hot and dry that it goes up in flames. The heat dome this summer had the highest recorded temperatures with some...

Re: About to move to Vancouver - final questions!

I signed up for the beta launch of Revolut in Canada but they cancelled my account last spring because they pulled out of the country due to the complex banking rules. They couldn't get a full...

Re: RichMitch's questions about cost of living

The figures on GDP per capita ratio that I looked at shows Canada (at 88.01%) is below the US but above the UK. It's probably going to get worse as the government has said it's ok with high debt.

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

The property examples from Barcelona are on par with Vancouver prices I'd say. The tiny apartment is probably even more expensive than a similarly priced apartment here in downtown Vancouver....

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

In the eighties or nineties he was offered the job of nightly news anchor on one of the big US networks (CBS, ABC or NBC) but he declined iirc. It would have increased his fame and fortune but I...

Re: Could I move to Atlantic Canada without quality of life DOWNGRADE?

I think it would be hard to replicate that kind of salary and holidays anywhere in Canada especially as a new arrival. I never got back to the 25 days I had in London. Enjoying beautiful scenery and...

Re: UK IT Professional seeking advice from fellow IT professionals expats in Can

My impression is that many sectors are flooded with applicants and it's been that way for years. I haven't found salaries in metro Vancouver that great. My work/life balance wasn't that great when I...

Re: Container Problems - Vancouver to UK

Another issue which may have a long term impact on costs and shipping times is that shipping companies now have to factor in environmental and sustainability regulations into their operations.

Re: UK IT Professional seeking advice from fellow IT professionals expats in Can

If by system adminstrator/infrastructure engineer you mean providing operational support to an organisation's IT systems then I did it. That meant everything from desktop support, managing mobile...

Re: Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

From what I've read it's filmed around the Lower Mainland (around Vancouver) including Bowen Island as well as Squamish and further up the Fraser valley. Many made for TV and made for Netflix...

Re: Sacrificing paid leave for a better life?

In my experience it's been more stressful working in Canada than the UK. Factors contributing to it are: not having enough resources to properly do the job, lack of job security, less time off.

I...

Re: Sacrificing paid leave for a better life?

Interestingly I saw this article (https://www.msn.com/en-ca/health/wellness/canadian-workers-experienced-the-highest-daily-stress-levels-in-the-world-during-2020/ar-AAL4mP6) the other day stating...

Re: Moving back to UK after 12 years of not paying student loan

I did what you did but reversing the countries. I lived in the UK and didn't pay back my Canadian student loans for a couple of years. But I started to once I had enough savings. My loans had gone to...

Re: Moving from Canada to uk tax issues

Yes, that's what I meant. The USA is one of the few countries that taxes on worldwide income even if you live abroad and have no income in the USA. The person who advised the OP might be thinking...

Re: Moving from Canada to uk tax issues

Perhaps they are assuming Canada has similar tax laws to the US, whose citizens have to continue paying taxes when they move abroad. I think only one other country (Albania?) does this.

You do...

Re: Canadian whisky

I've just started with Bourbons and haven't been disappointed yet. I liked Buffalo Trace then upgraded to Eagle Rare (also from BT) which was really smooth. I liked Woodford Reserve as well.

Re: Revolut for UK to CA transfers (vs Transferwise)

Revolut hasn't been around in Canada as long as it has in the UK and doesn't have as many features. Only recently they allowed deposits other than by credit card.

Re: The Brexit 50p Oxford Comma Dilemma

Let me re-phrase that. Without the Oxford comma the statement is more ambiguous. By including it we know more clearly that "peace with all nations" is also meant. I think it's important to be clear...

Re: Still homesick after 56 years...

There was a large outdoor pool that was filled in with concrete (before 1995 though). That would have changed the summertime atmosphere. Lucky there are still a couple in Vancouver I guess.
