Wish I've had that link before I called the embassy .. would have saved me €150 .. too bad I was told to do this by the person I spoke with. Perhaps this thread can help people in doubt in the future...

I suspect that is possible, but as you can see above the embassy says it's totally mandatory. At least we have got rid of this potential obstacle.

Well, as a layman I don't want to question that - I was a bit rushed as I had to rush over to UPS. At least there was no way we could go without getting the stickers in the passports.
