I got my 2 Canadian born kids their UK passports before leaving Canada (they already had Canadian passports) I know it's costly but it's one less thing to worry about when you get off the plane.

Both my kids were born in Canada while I was a PR (FWIW my OH is Canadian), I don't think you're doing anything wrong I received maternity benefit (EI) and child tax benefit. Hopefully someone else...
