Re: Run its course

A lot of people came for 6 months or less, owned a second home here but remained resident in UK.
When you're limited to 3 months, it's just not so much fun.

And then there is natural attrition;...

Re: Weather in Portugal

I think the weather is too "good"!
That is to say, it feels very pleasant but the lack of rain is a serious problem.

Anyway, glad you (almost) made it out of China. I wish you a happy life here...

Re: Car inspection question

If your car has a fail, they give you 30 days to get it repaired, even if you old inspection had more time on it; so if you have an old banger that might be scrap worthy, or you have some other time...

Re: Run its course

Maybe that's the result of brexit?
Simply fewer Brit expats out here in the EU.

It seems to me most posts are by newbies who need a little help; and there has to be fewer after brexit and the...

Re: When to pick pine nuts?

Commercial growers use machines to separate the seeds.
Another machine peels them.
After that they have a limited shelf life unless they're processed.

Even with mechanization, it takes a lot...

Re: Cooking- Halogen mini oven, induction hob or Butano?

Fuel used for cooking is not so much; most of your energy use will be hot water and house heating.

So use whatever cooking fuel you like cooking with.

Re: Protecting new car from sun during long absences

I had a cover made by the Lagos shop.
Good work.
Good material.
Friendly.
Not fast.
Not cheap

Re: Protecting new car from sun during long absences

You can always get it made by a sailmaker, if you're willing to pay the cost.
I've had a few custom covers made.

Re: trying to install a heat pump

Back to square 1, yes; what we need is good objective advice. And that's a problem when the advice person is also the installation and sales person.
This is why I prefer to do everything myself;...

Re: trying to install a heat pump

So actually, a heat pump is a reversible air conditioner.
When used as an air conditioner, it's an air conditioner. The new ones are more efficient than the old ones, but the principles of...

Re: trying to install a heat pump

Yes, I have spoken to FF solar several times over the years, and I talked to them about this as well.
They have great material and experience, but terrible prices.
And every time I go there, the...

Re: trying to install a heat pump

Had a meeting with another heating engineer today; he suggests a Daikin split unit.
The inside section is an evaporator (heating part on the cycle) combined with a hot water buffer tank.
Quite...

Re: trying to install a heat pump

With taipa walls, I don't think you'd hear anything.
The exterior units don't usually attach to the wall, but rest on a concrete block.

A company in Lagos got back to me and I'll meet someone...

Re: trying to install a heat pump

Actually, the few I did talk to are really enthusiastic about PV power for the heat pump.
The new heat pumps have controls that can be set to optimize different energy sources; cheaper night rate...

trying to install a heat pump

As we live on the west coast all year round, we need some heat in winter.
When we first got here, I installed underfloor heat plumbing and an old oil burner as a stop gap.
That was 12 years ago.

Re: Looking forward to September

In our area (Aljezur) I've observed crews working on the drainage all year; private farms as well as public space.
The road edges are shoveled clear, ditches dug out, culverts cleaned.

We're...

Re: Looking forward to September

Long sleeves in the day, fan at night.
No worries now though; they've just announced a malaria vaccine.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to November.
The tourists will go home, the weather will...

Re: Protecting new car from sun during long absences

I strongly advise you to spend a bit more than that.
A good thick heavy impervious cover is a minimum.
I have one of those cheapos, water soaks right through (I use it against bird droppings in the...

Re: Electricity Costs

I'm going to install a large air to water heat pump for heat and winter domestic hot water
that will cut my energy bill by about 50%.

Then I'll probably install solar PV and a singe thermal panel...

Re: Repainting car

I don't waste a single cent on Sagres, but I did paint my car some years ago and I plan to paint it again next year.
I don't do it for other people, I do it for myself.

Azul = blue

Changing the registration document is quite straightforward but it takes some time and costs some money.
I had a driving school do it for me, cost 150 or so as I recall. took a couple...

Re: To Swim or not to Swim?

The headlines about the UK discharging waste were rather misleading; nothing to do with any change in regulation, it was due to excessive rainfall overwhelming the combined sewage / drainage systems....

Re: Looking forward to September

I thought tiger balm was ancient history...
My mother swore by the stuff but I don't think I've heard it mentioned for 30 years or more.
