Re: First Tax submission in US (California): Chaos!

I would presume you can file as a partial year resident for California even if you elect to file federally for the entire year in order to use married filing jointly on your federal return?

Re: WTF in America Part 2

These covers tend to be ineffective - thieves just cut through both the cover and the catalytic converter.

Check where your converter is located. On my hybrid, it's between the engine and the...

Re: WTF in America

I don’t think HIPAA protects information about potential criminal activity. And marijuana usage is illegal everywhere under federal law.

Meanwhile, “what’s the matter with Kansas”???

Re: Planespotting II

Given Twitter is a private company, it's not a 1A issues. However, it does illustrate just how hypocritical his claim to be a "free speech absolutist" is.

Re: Englishman killed by police, police face charges

And nothing will change. With such a heavily armed citizenry, there is no way that police are going to go around unarmed. Every interaction with an individual - like this one - police have to assume...

Re: Robocop comes to San Francisco

It's a state law and it's that theft under that amount has to be charged as a misdemeanour not a felony.

The robocop idea was voted down.

Re: Drug costs

I use GoodRx for a prescription and it works out about a third of the cost of if I used my Medicare Drug plan. That's an indication of just how messed up it is that Medicare cannot yet negotiate any...

Re: Stay in UK or Go back to Walnut?

I was here for Loma Prieta in '89 - in an office building on landfill! - but that's a fair point.

Re: Stay in UK or Go back to Walnut?

Never heard Walnut Creek called Walnut during the whole time I lived in the East Bay. Especially confusing given there is actually a town called Walnut in southern California, which is what I thought...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Right, only driving directions. The other limitation is that you don't get lane guidance. If by re-routes you mean adjusting your route if you've taken a wrong turn, pretty sure that works offline....

Re: Let's talk about cars

I went through similar reasoning, thinking initially I’d get a plug-in hybrid. But plug-ins by definition need a much bigger battery than a hybrid and, because they also have an ICE, that battery...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Below 20 (?) mph fake engine noise is a legal requirement here for electric vehicles (and hybrids when the gas engine is not running). Silent moving vehicles can be a hazard for pedestrians,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

18% of new car sales in California are zero-emission vehicles (which, bizarrely, includes plugin-hybrids). That's by far the highest percentage for a US state. By comparison, over 75% of new car...

I didn’t realize until the Twitter kerfuffle that Musk didn’t found Tesla. He joined about six months after it was incorporated. He was, however, by far the biggest early investor. Also amusing that...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

You’d have to do the calculation based on your life expectancy and projecting how much your WEP would be reduced given the smaller percentage of the UK pension that would be subject to the WEP versus...
