Re: Citizenship

Well, I was basing my comments on processing time off people I know who have been through it in the last 2yrs. I have 2 in my office, it took 6 and 8mths respectively. I'm simply saying that once...

Re: Citizenship

Thanks, I thought about that. We don't intend to travel overseas until end of 2018 so hopefully all done by then. I have a friend who sat the test for citizenship 2mths after applying and expects to...

Has anyone been through this and got any insights on...

Calgary - a good place to be?

Well, after nearly 4yrs we are considering somewhere else in Canada.

Positives are;
There are jobs (yes even with the oil/gas downturn)
Decent standard of living - larger home with more...

Re: Bank account opening and proof of address

We did this in Calgary in 2013 (2yrs ago). We booked into a hotel for 2 weeks whilst looking for an apartment - problem being apartments were few and they all wanted a cheque etc and you need bank...

Re: Calgary Property Tax Assessment

Not sure what this means. I have been advised by the city that its a percentage multiplied by your assessed value, but if your assessed value is too high, you'll pay too much. I've been told i can...

Re: Calgary Property Tax Assessment

Well, got ours and suffice to say very high. They reckon 707,500 as at July 1st 2014, trouble is we bought it 10 days before that for 628 and have full mortgage appraisal and homebuyers report to...

Re: Trying to Find a Job/Employment from UK don't bother

Well I like to run and cycle and I exercise very hard when I do. You can't do these in 2 feet of snow and ice, but I could have done more in the gym I guess.

The supermarkets in Calgary are very...

Re: Trying to Find a Job/Employment from UK don't bother

There have been a few posts like this and I can genuinely see it from both sides. My wife and I are 12mths into our Canadian adventure and both have jobs (lower paid than before) and are looking to...

Re: Nearly 2 months in Calgary....!

I wouldn't go that far, Airdrie AB is a bit grubby and nowhere special to go. One road links to Calgary and its a bit blue collar but otherwise ok. Probably not a bad bet if you don't mind commuting...

Re: NS driving licence. Can you keep UK one?

You are told that your license is sent back to your country of origin and "cancelled". I know conclusively that this does not happen as I have spoken to DVLA about it. I believe they retain and/or...

Re: AOR from London August/September 2010 - Progress updates

from memory it takes 2-3 weeks, annoying thing is they don't give a time frame and you can't travel anywhere without a passport obviously. You can virtually book your flights. I think you have to do...

Re: Nearly 2 months in Calgary....!

Airdrie is on industrial side but not completely unattractive. House prices are rising fast - I drive through it every day. I think we'd all live somewhere like Cochrane given the choice but more...

Re: AOR from London August/September 2010 - Progress updates

Pleased for you. Problem is there are so many false starts and ends of one stage then another begins that CIC can't see that people's lives move on in periods of 2,3,4,5+yrs. My wife was principal...

Re: Trying to Find a Job/Employment from UK don't bother

This is all true Riv. You have to be flexibly minded and remember your original reasons for coming to Canada. If you are heavily career focused you need to get to Dubai or temporary expat...

Re: SIN but no address

Calgary, AB. They didn't issue them at the time - don't ask me why, I don't know. They did their best to be helpful but looked a lot like bureacracy for its own sake really.

Re: Goodbye Canada Hello Capital Gains Tax

Like your style Rich. You were most unfortunate to get audited before you'd even filed for the first year - seems a bit aggressive but even HMRC are going that way.

Re: Working abroad canada expo manchester 29th - 30th

yogi is right. These shows are titilators really for people flirting with the idea and usually at the very start of the process. The wiki on here is quite good, you can buy a book on amazon which...

We spoke to them nicely and asked them to have the numbers (just a letter with Sin numbers on really) posted to the Service Canada office where you applied for SIN numbers. They should hold them for...

Re: Goodbye Canada Hello Capital Gains Tax

CRA can't audit an asset held overseas. Grow up and get off your high horse.

I'm aware income taxes aren't related to CGT but the income derived from the asset was derived in UK currency so the...

Re: Goodbye Canada Hello Capital Gains Tax

Just a thought but exchange rate in 2002 was 2.25CAD$ to the pound and is now 1.85 so 40c lower. It would be possible to demonstrate an appreciation or gain in value of the asset but a loss when...

Re: NS driving licence. Can you keep UK one?

This is Canadian BS really. They don't have the right to "cancel" a driving licence in another country. The obvious thing to do is photocopy your other licence before surrendering it. The alternative...
