Re: Should we move to NZ?

I think this is one of the most accurate descriptions of New Zealand I've read in a long time

Re: Leaving Auckland...

Nah, really meant depart Auckland, not in a box. No, there's much life and adventure left in us yet.

Re: Money money money!

I think Davros is right. Auckland is now too expensive for many folks to have a good, sustainable life here. It's one of the most expensive cities to live in the world. The compromises you...

Re: Torbay opinions please

Looking out my window now I can see palms, greenery, tangelos, etc., still doesn't make me want to stay in Auckland though.

I don't think Torbay is quite the cafe scene at all. Better with...

Re: Leaving Auckland...

Can understand your frustration with Auckland. Been here quite a while and if we weren't living in Auckland we wouldn't be in NZ.

However, when we first came here we heard so much about the...

Re: Money money money!

Personally, I would say stay put. It's not worth the effort coming here. It's one of the most expensive places to live and the weather is not good. And it's not as if you can compensate for...

Re: Been in New Zealand 2 weeks - Auckland area . Poss. Albany?

Albany is okay as places go. I prefer the North Shore as it has a fresh and modern feel to it and also reminds us more of Oz where we used to live.
It has as you said a good shopping centre, but...

Re: Auckland - I wouldn't

I don't think I'd ever confuse Auckland with London! Auckland's like a country town with bad traffic problems, which are getting worse by the week. You cannot have a city without a decent...

Re: Cost of living data

The last time I was in Cyprus we had great British breakfasts of good quality bacon, tasty eggs, beans and tomatoes. Plus lovely local bread, all for the price of one pound fifty pence! If they...

Re: Cost of living data

Well said. The price and standard of café food here is terrible. I hate muffins and never ate the damn things until I came here but order these because they are the cheapest thing on the menu. ...

Re: Make the move? take the risk - honest opinions sought

I think you should consider the move very carefully before doing anything. Auckland has many problems - housing costs being the main one. Like you, we have worked and lived in many places...

Re: Thoughts on Beach Haven & Hobsonville?

Hi,

Where are the Malls near Beach Haven? Also, the Birkenhead Ferry is also a fair distance from BH. The motorway is miles away across the river and cannot be reached from BH.

Re: about renting a house/apt in NZ

We've always taken a short-term rental giving only three weeks' notice. However, we've lived in the places for more than six months. But if you're moving around so frequently then holiday rental...

Re: Thoughts on Beach Haven & Hobsonville?

Took a drive to Beach Haven last week and couldn't believe how bad it was. It looked dirty, tired and uncared for. The shops looked tacky (except for the nice chocolate shop) and crime is a...

Re: Urgent advice needed

I believe you should think very carefully about the move. NZ is one of the most expensive places to live in and prices just keep rising. Frankly, it simply doesn't live up to the hype which you...

Re: RentinG first property in NZ

No, most estate agents are not like this. Firstly, you should decide on the area you want to live in and then go to the local ones. Also, read the local papers to see if there is anything in...

Re: Auckland

I believe Auckland's getting worse. Spending Christmas and New Year here reinforces just how lacking the place is :goodpost:compared to Europe. The shops are diabolical and don't even try to make...

Re: Where to go

Having lived in a few places around NZ I could only live in Auckland. The other cities don't do much for me and Auckland seems like a country town at times.

Re: Auckland Trip Nov 14 - Howick Suburb Advice

I think that some folks just don't appreciate how quickly the house prices in Auckland have risen over the past years. Davros is quite correct in his comments. When we first came to the North...

Re: Auckland Trip Nov 14 - Howick Suburb Advice

What about the North SHore? Milford, Takapuna, Northcote are all less than thirty minutes from the the centre of town. Although they are expensive places to buy into there's plenty of rentals...
