DMU raises a very good point, often unknown by those who have parents (elderly or otherwise) resident in France.
Information available on line tends to be a little vague on the costs of retirement...

Fwiw, here's my take on the situation. I wouldn't have carpeting in my home, and neither would my wife, even if it was offered free of charge...
