Re: Gathering firewood

Driftwood from the ocean has absorbed salt. Burning of salt releases dioxins ( sodium and chloride) , some argue that dioxins are toxic and cause cancer. I’m no chemist however and have no idea. I’m...

Re: Gathering firewood

Unfortunately the salt in driftwood will wreck your fireplace, plus the vapours produced are carcinogenic.

Re: Living in Waipawa, Hawkes Bay

Loads of people commute from Waipawa, Waipukurau into Hastings and Napier. Good road with loads of passing lanes. Scenic. I know this because I grew up in Central Hawkes Bay and have family in...

Re: Rum 'n' Raisin - The greatest Pirate Treasure

Jelly-Tip ice creams were one of my favourites as a child too. I'm sure when I was a little there was way less jelly. I'm not so keen on the new version :(
I'm a loyal Rush Munroe icecream...

Re: Manuka trees/bushes.

My first thought was to get stuck in and prune the manuka to bits. However on reflection I think it would depend on the maturity of the shrubs/trees. I have young manukas which I lightly clip and...

Re: Liverpool to Palmerston North

I think its definitely cultural. As a kiwi living in the UK I had real difficulty adjusting to the houses there. I found so many homes made me claustrophobic. I longed to bash down walls and...

Re: Country/Rural Living

Is it a rental? Cos honestly the landlord should be sorting this out for you.

Also if you're near a reserve let your district council know. They are supposed to do pest control around parks/public...

Re: Country/Rural Living

If your house is surrounded by native bush you'll find rats a pain. Rats will climb trees, leap onto your roof and start nesting in the house - especially with winter on its way. We keep all trees...

Re: Is there anyone in Thames?

On your virtual stroll through Thames you would have noticed its a rather small township. Thames perks up over the summer months but come winter it can be a tad morose and brooding ( well that's the...

Re: Any negatives to Tauranga

I prefer Bethlehem to Papamoa also. There are a surprising number of hidden gems dotted around. Pyes Pa has some very nice enclaves. Oropi too. You won't see these places from the main roads.

Re: Any negatives to Tauranga

I've managed to think of a few things I don't like about Tauranga/Mt Maunganui.

We have NO museum!! I've lived in many towns/cities throughout NZ and this is the only place that has no museum....

In larger centres she would most definitely be in demand, especially if she also teaches music theory. Trinity College / ABRSM are both familiar exam boards to NZ musos.

Schools receive some...

Re: When was your " think I've settled" moment

I popped into a brewing shop a few days ago out of curiosity. The place was fascinating, I think it could be quite fun concocting a home brew. I've made alcoholic ginger beer a few times (...
