Re: Work/life balance with only two weeks holiday

Unlimited vacation is the policy where I work. There was some skepticism when it was first introduced, but it's actually working out quite well for most people. We're an IT company and junior staff...

Re: Sort of retirement plan

Do bear in mind that in NB you'll pay extra (almost double) in property tax for all non-occupied properties. For my roughly 700 sq ft house that I rent out, I pay about $3200 in taxes.

Re: Canada's vacation politics

Same for the company I work for. I used to have 5 weeks + stats, but it changed to something called 'Flex-time'. This basically means we can take as much as we want, so long as the work is done. ...

Re: Thinking of moving to Nova Scotia / New Brunswick

Cxx is correct in that there are plenty of IT jobs available in NB, especially in Fredericton. A few companies in town are having problems filling roles. What area of IT are you looking for?

Re: Gaining common-law status for permanent residency

Thanks for all your feedback and advice. It pretty much confirms what I was thinking.

Studying isn't really an option because of the costs involved, else it would have been a good idea.

Re: manual or auto

Not sure about insurance, but when I've looked at buying new cars online the manuals are always cheaper by about $1300.

Re: Broadband Map of Canada / BBC iPlayer

We have the 30MB Fire-Op here in Fredericton. They've just upgraded to Fibre-Op 2, so now we get 3 megs a second upload and download - constantly. Awesome :)

Re: Living in Halifax, flying from Maine?

Halifax to Bangor will be around 7 hours without stopping. Have you checked for flights out of Houlton? You can get them sometimes, which would reduce driving to around 5.5 hours.

Re: Courteous driving in Canada?

That's the first time I've heard someone say that hate roundabouts, especially an expat! I find 4 way stops (in fact most stops) so frustrating, especially when there is no traffic. Luckily here in...

Out of town you might be...
