Re: Covid 19 Travel/Immigration to USA - please check here and ask questions

Minor question for near future, my I-94 renewal is up in October and I expect we’ll be fully in the middle of this by then. However with pressure to open up economy etc, who knows what might be open...

Re: $1200 Payout. Are immigrants eligible?

thanks, good point. I’m saving all unspent money in a sort of hibernation mode in case needed later. Must be horrible for those losing jobs and getting sick, really really difficult and sad times.

Re: 2020 census

I’ve done it. I thought there were good reasons to do it and I’m all good with that. However it wasn’t clear to me whether optional or if any downsides for some particular set of circumstances. I’m...

we’ve done it now, it was only the short census and it took minutes. All good. Although pretty sure someone doesn’t know difference between nationality,...

Re: $1200 Payout. Are immigrants eligible?

What’s the threshold for joint filing income? I don’t currently need but if it comes anyway I think it’s best to find some way to donate to frontline staff, for medical supplies, PPE or any other way...

Re: 2020 census

Oh I think the confusion comes from, if you are chosen to participate you have to do it.
I don’t think we have been, although we’ve not checked the mail for a couple of weeks so could be in there...

Re: US Coronavirus and US-style lockdowns

oh great, let me check that. It wasn’t the case a few days ago, maybe they extended things recently. Makes sense. Not like I’m using the car or going out at the moment.

Re: 2020 census

Oh, if it’s legally required then my question is null and void!

2020 census

Hi,

so obviously my family and I as here in the US (NYC) fully legitimately and we see adverts for the census. I understand there are good reasons to do it, like funding and so on.

my question...

Re: US Coronavirus and US-style lockdowns

great link, thanks, can’t help but think this is optimistic, or at least the hidden gem is all measures must remain in place almost indefinitely otherwise it will come right back.
at least until...

Re: US Coronavirus and US-style lockdowns

Interesting, being in NYC I’m painfully aware of the hotspot, but large differences in numbers are typically only a few days or weeks away everywhere. Wasn’t long ago NY had less than 10k cases.

Re: Qualifying for renting prior to landing in the US

I see what you mean, maybe it’s something I did at the bank and forgot about then. Meeting residency strictly, even if anticipated, isn’t satisfied until the criteria for it are met I presume, n days...

Re: Qualifying for renting prior to landing in the US

i didn’t do a W-8, never heard of it. Assuming you are returning as a tax resident, in the end you’ll be tax resident from the first date of entry in that year, i.e. prior to opening the account, the...

Re: Work life in the USA compared to the UK, Software/IT Field

My experience is it is similar but like all things there’s a lot of variability between jobs, no two jobs are the same even if they seem to be on paper, UK and US alike. If you find a good employer...

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

It seems it depends exactly where you go and who you speak to, chase kicked up a fuss over SSN when I went, I just moved on quickly,
However, I did NOT have trouble with address, I gave US work...

to be sure not to fail I booked a minimal package with...

Re: Qualifying for renting prior to landing in the US

sure. It’s definitely legal to open a non-interest checking account without SSN but different banks and staff naturally have different understanding on this, and internal policies too.

I think...

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

Yes. Some told me it was definitely forbidden by their own internal policies, with great, certain and convincing conviction. Chase being one as I recall. Whether that is just plain wrong I don’t...

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

yeah I agree. However I’d say that extends to managers as I argued with several and no joy. So I moved on and tried many until one said yes. It was the big banks that seemed worse, Chase for example...

Re: Qualifying for renting prior to landing in the US

I had trouble for sure, but after a few goes I found a branch that agreed to it. Seems it’s not illegal (for a simple checking account) but they each have their policies. Some banks flat out refused....

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

While SSN not required for checking accounts (is for savings) I actually got turned away from several banks and the big ones before TD agreed. I think it depends to a degree on the manager. Not...

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

TD bank opened me an account without ssn, so long as you can meet their min balance you can also get free banking and atm fees refunded too. Another option. Personally if capital one will let you...

Re: International Driving License

it is. I have Uk property also and several U.K. addresses but because I’m not resident there, UK license cannot be issued, renewed etc. If it cannot be issued it is not (no longer) valid.

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

I think capital one checking is free, I don’t recall seeing or being charged. There might be a min balance threshold but I just keep a few $k there and so never noticed. Their mobile app is very good...
