Re: what areas of Penang do most expats live?

I think the whole of that area is to be avoided for a few years - I was in Marina Bay which is already badly affected by noise and pollution associated with the construction. Same goes IMHO for...

Re: Adding an SSD to your laptop

My experience with hybrid disk drives is that they don't offer much of a performance boost whereas an SSD can make a sluggish PC quite athletic.

Re: Stock market trading on Malaysian stcok exchange

I think the confusion is down to the concept of trading. If you are trading then capital gains and dividends would be taxable as income.
Generally the Malaysian tax authorities consider you are a...

Re: Retiring in Malaysia - Malaysia My Second Home Visa (MM2H)

Well we can at least agree that the MM2H visa confers the right to be tax-resident in Malaysia whereas a tourist visa (be it for Malaysia or elsewhere) does not.

Re: Retiring in Malaysia - Malaysia My Second Home Visa (MM2H)

It's a bit misleading to say that MM2H visa holders are tourists even if the programme is under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Generally speaking a tourist is a non-resident...

Re: Retiring in Malaysia - Malaysia My Second Home Visa (MM2H)

I am also of the view that the MM2H programme is way, way down the list of priorities for the new government and I would expect/hope that the much-vaunted MM2H changes will be put on hold until a...

Re: Change of Government After 61 Years

This is a slightly tricky subject for this forum (as SushiFan had pointed out) since MM2H'ers are supposed to refrain from political activism but clearly all the parameters are changing at the moment...

Re: Retiring in Malaysia - Malaysia My Second Home Visa (MM2H)

Thanks for reporting back on the MM2H presentation at E&O, merlinman. It seems the rumours, which have been circulating for some months are true, and the MM2H qualification criteria are being...

MM2H visa processing difficulties

I am hearing of more and more people waiting longer and longer (6 months +) for their MM2H visas. A friend tells me that 12 months is not unheard of.

I even heard of someone being refused MM2H...

Re: Opening a Bank Account in Kuala Lumpur

My God - how complicated can you make this?

What I did when I came to Malaysia was to bring EUR 5K in cash. I went into HSBC to open an account and they brought a money changer into the branch to...

Re: What Does Malaysia Sees it Gets out of MM2H?

Anyone who is keen to get a Malaysian view on MM2H should go along to the British Consul afternoon tea on 20th March at which Datin Sharifah Ikhlas (the current MM2H top gun) is giving a...

Careful SushiFan, you're in danger of giving away our secrets, like the special MM2H handshake

Re: What Does Malaysia Sees it Gets out of MM2H?

There was some discussion on this in another thread:-

This thread also is interesting, especially...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

I doubt they visit this forum and really MM2H is pretty insignificant to the economy so if people never stay here or they spend all year here I don't suppose anyone is terribly bothered. What we...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

That's a very interesting point you make, Davita, and one I'd never thought of before. By calling the program "second" home it implies you should have a first home elsewhere and presumably should...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

RedApe, there are some other very good BE threads on the whole issue of tax residency in Malaysia and disentangling oneself from HMRC.

As regards MM2H, I think this (or a long term social pass)...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

Actually there is one major privilege which no-one has suggested will be withdrawn - no tax liability and, just as importantly, no need to do tax returns either

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

There may well be better ways to manage immigration but, as Davita says, it is Malaysia's choice how they do it. It is rather better than the US system ;)

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

That is exactly why anyone over-staying their on-arrival visa is treated very harshly indeed and those visa-running are looked at with considerable suspicion. If you aren't prepared to go the MM2H...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

I think there is a fundamental problem with this line of argument.

That is because you are looking at this solely from the point of view of a Perpetual Tourist who should be given the freedom to...

Re: MM2H - do you consider MY your permanent base or just a 2nd home?

People obviously have different interpretations of MM2H and its role in the Malaysian economy.

I don't know the reasons behind its adoption by Malaysia but looking at the rules it's not too...

Re: Things to do at Malaysian traffic lights

What you can do depends on whether it is a 60 sec, 120 sec, 180 sec or 240 sec red light. The longer the wait, the more likely someone in front of you has either dozed off or answered the call to...

Re: Poll on takeover spammy things and virusy browser hijacking on BE

I have Apple, Android and W10 with Safari, Chrome and Firefox and don't have any issues at all. It sounds like this may be a rogue ad which is installing redirects in your browser. I (and most of...
