Re: Right Wing Conspiracy Nuts

Yup. The world in the TNG era is basically a post-scarcity anarcho-socialist paradise. No need for money, people work to better themselves and humanity, more or less anything you could ever want can...

Re: UK - 2021

Go to the UK and buy a car first - go over on the ferry and get the train (or grab a cheapo Ryanair flight) to where you need to go, buy the car (pay to have the AA or RAC look over it to make sure...

US --> UK, while retaining US job - pay, taxes, etc?

So, my wife and I are seriously considering returning to the UK at some point in '21.

I've been working remotely for my US employer for most of this year, and they're looking to go completely...

Re: UK - 2021

There's even been talk that an independent Scotland could be the sixth country to join the Nordic Council, along with Denmark, Sweden, Noway, Finland and Iceland, and that it would share the same...

Re: Opening UK bank account from the US?

A good solution is to use one of the online-only banks. Revolut is great - download the Revolut app and open a Revolut account in the US - it includes the ability to have accounts in different...

Re: US small appliances in UK

Yep. I'd be wary of anything with a motor. Last time we returned to the UK in 2012, we brought a Kitchenaid food processor with us - it did work with a stepdown transformer, but the motor ran more...

Re: Paying down UK debts before returning?

Yes, it's bad, in the 500s. :(

I felt a pang of jealousy when a friend of mine was showing a perfect credit score of 999 recently - how does anyone actually achieve that?

(stock response -...

Re: Paying down UK debts before returning?

That's why I want to pay them off. It's just something that got sidelined.
But no, we owe more than the return would cost, that's why I want to start getting it under control in advance.

Re: Paying down UK debts before returning?

I've actually corresponded with Stepchange about this, they basically said since we've been out of the UK for more than 3 years there's not much they can do. The guy I spoke to actually suggested we...

Paying down UK debts before returning?

We're seriously considering returning to the UK next year from the US. Just got to the point where I think we're both exhausted with life here and have had enough. Too much stress. I know the UK is...

Re: Wanting to move back - sounds like I'm not alone

I believe so. If you could put it into a joint account with both your names on it would probably look better though.

Re: Moving to UK from USA. Electronics/Appliance Help

As a rule, if an electrical appliance contains a motor, don't bother bringing it as, even with a stepdown transformer, the electrical frequency will be wrong and it'll run more slowly (50Hz vs 60Hz)....

Re: Wanting to move back - sounds like I'm not alone

Yes, but he'll be subject to the usual spousal visa rules - you have to provide proof of relationship, and you have to have either an income of £18,600 in the UK (might mean you going back first and...

Re: Wanting to move back - sounds like I'm not alone

It's not *all* bad. I get paid more and have a bigger house than I would have had in the UK. We have lots of nice 'stuff'. So that's nice, but it's not the be-all and end-all.

But, especially...

Re: Wanting to move back - sounds like I'm not alone

Join the club. The US is getting increasingly dystopian and isn't an environment where I want my three kids to grow up. The current COVID situation has just exacerbated this further. The UK might...

Re: Ireland now with Brexit

Other than the current stability issue, thanks to Brexit, there's a few ways Ireland's system is better than the UK's:

Elections by proportional representation, not FPTP
A wider selection of...

Re: Yes or No?

I think Treeza will scrape through this no confidence vote by the skin of her teeth, but her authority and credibility are shot.

Then there's Corbyn angling for an election - I've always been a...

Re: Yes or No?

Still requires people to have a private pension - those who have only the state pension to rely on are out.

The pound will also be worth less than it is now assuming a hard Brexit, so any...

Re: Yes or No?

Depends on what the Brexit deal ends up being.

If it's a full-on WTO hard Brexit, then all bets are off and it's not likely that there'll be any reciprocity in healthcare provision whatsoever....

Re: Yes or No?

With Brexit, the UK will no longer be a member of EHIC, so, no, the NHS won't be paying their medical bills.

Given that most Brits who move to Spain are retirees and at the stage of life where...

Re: Yes or No?

Rich people, maybe.

This is one of the big problems with Brexit and free movement - before the EU, free movement was a class thing. If you were rich, you could pretty much move and live anywhere....

Re: Yes or No?

I've heard JRM bibbling on about the UK becoming a "vassal state" of the EU if there's no hard Brexit. The thing is, if JRM and Boris have their way and get their hard Brexit, they'll quickly steer...

This is why I'd quite like to keep my EU citizenship. I want an escape plan that doesn't involve the UK!

Re: Yes or No?

I don't even want to visit the UK anymore since Brexit, let alone move back. The whole thing has left a nasty taste in my mouth.

At least our (big, fat, orange, stupid) issues here in the US have...
