I transfered to the US in 2004 on an L1 visa. My employer paid UK National Insurance by international transfer on my behalf instead of US Social Security. This was deducted from my bi-weekly pay...

The company would usually pay to ship your stuff out there as well as give you a moving allowance. Furnished apartments are hard to find in NY and are usually corporate lets so are pretty expensive....

I've been on an L1 visa for 5 years now and have never paid SS or medicare. I still pay UK NIS instead. This was at the advice of our company Tax consultants. Never had any issues with it.

I'm not sure exactly how it works but I don't have to pay any tax on it in the UK. The value of the rent I receive is slightly less than I pay out in mortgage and fees. I just give the info to PWC...

This is not Americans getting ripped off, it's just differences between renting a car in Europe compared to the US. In Europe all the major car companies charge an excess on the insurance (CDW & TP)...

I make the trip up to Portland every 6-8 weeks on business and usually take Delta from LGA. It would be much better for me to go from Newark but the Continental prices from Newark are usually around...

You do have to register every year which is around $40 I think. The inspection is every 2 years but is free if you go to the state inspection center.

If your renting a house you will not have to pay the property taxes (the landlord is responsible for that). Normally the water and sewerage is included in the rent also. There is no road tax to pay...
