Re: Is moving from the UK really worth it?!

I will offer a perspective from someone who has been here a few years now in Canada.
If you don't come over, then you will always be wondering what you have missed. Then again, you may regret coming...

Re: Where to get a 220V plug?

Use a step-up transformer or power supply that plugs into a normal 110 V outlet and delivers 220 v output.

If you have a Home Hardware store in your area, they sell all sizes of electrical plugs, including the two-pin ones.

Re: Self service checkouts Yay or Nay?

If it's anything like our local Loblaws, the checkout staff are so slow and inefficient and customers let them scan the groceries then just stand there watching as the lady bags it all for them...

Re: Moving to Ottawa

Bus service to and from Kanata is OK. We live in north Kanata, where most of the high-tech stuff is, but I get the bus downtown every day. Taxi takes about 40 mins to the airport and is around $60...

Re: Failed job application, re-advertised.

I would apply again without making any reference to the previous application. The first application was probably rejected by a box-ticking young HR person or automated system and if you refer to the...

Re: 9 Dead in Van Incident in Toronto

Re: Ottawa Info Required

We've lived in Kanata for the past 18 years and enjoying it. This Ottawa suburb has plenty to offer on its own as well as the surrounding area. Easy to get to places like Toronto; Montreal; Quebec;...

Re: Confused by electrical!

I remember people on here getting overly excited about this and saying it never happened before. Thing is, who wants to be the first one it happens to? We know insurance companies try to weasel out...

Re: Confused by electrical!

The mixer is for UK voltage only and will not work here without a transformer or equivalent. Just buy a new mixer here.
The specifications for the piano look OK. Voltage and frequency are...

Re: I've made the decision! Advice please :)

I have worked in IT in Ottawa for many years. It's called 'Silicon Valley North' as it is (or maybe not now) the largest tech area in North America outside of the original 'Silicon Valley' in...

Re: Network Engineering job advice?

The system admin / networking fields are quite active in IT here in Ottawa at least. Plenty of government-related jobs and private industry.
When I moved to Canada looking for work in this field, I...

Re: Ottawa transport early in the morning

You can get a taxi from any of the downtown hotels. Nearest to Rideau Centre is the Westin hotel. If the destination is just the other side of the river in Hull then it's a 20-min walk across the...

Re: Job application Responses

Even when you're living and well established in Canada, most employers don't respond to your applications. A few do, but even if they're interested in you it could still take weeks to get a response....

Re: Car rental in UK advice

Check your credit card rules. Some have car rental coverage, some don't. For short trips and if $ are not short, take the rental company insurance as it's less problem to sort out a claim (ie,...

Re: Quark?

The Byward Market area in Ottawa is a good place to try. They have specialised cheese shops and there was (maybe still is) a health food place on Bank Street.
