If kids were born in Spain, they have to be registered with UK embassy as British nationals before they reach 18y, otherwise they loose it.
Your marriage in UK should have been register with SP...

Temporary 5y cards are being issued to those who have over 5y of residence. They should been given 10y Permanente.

Its standard wait 3-4 weeks for card issue by SEF. Card will be valid for 5y if applicant has less then 5y of residence. Dates on card refer to card validity, not status, just like driving lic does....

Booking is done on brexit portal.
It sounds like SEF has given up on idea of using Camara's. Not sure why, as bio-metrics taking kit is portable suitcase.

There is no such thing as NIE card, but only NIE number.
It's more of like identification number for dealing with gov departments.
You can get it in any Spanish consulate, no job needed. Google.

Failed to upload table for D7 requirements.

1st 2 years, at least 16 months presence per 2y period, provided no absence exceed 6 consecutive months.
Next 3y, at least 28 months presence per 3y...

As you have discovered, visa (sticker) is something that issued at embassy/consulate.
Passport stamping is only done at border crossings. Just to clarify above posts.

Not relevant if he travels with EU wife, both will be exercising freedom of movement.
They must bring wedding cert. I believe Spanish can register foreign marriage in Spain, so could bring that...

Taxes are not only on pensions, but apply to all worldwide assets you own, which you would have to declare (if you become resident).

If I was on your shoes, I would avoid becoming ES tax domiciled...

That is only true if you only ever enter or exit Schengen through Spain and you have TIE.
Problems arise when you enter/exit Schengen through state other then Spain and your stamps dont add up....
