Re: California - departures and arrivals

Housing prices in California are going up because demand exceeds supply.

The population of California is going down.

A thought: both of these things can be true at the same time.

Also, I'm...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

This thread went far beyond this case and started to discuss systemic racism, the "deeply flawed" American justice system, the racism of white Americans etc. Yes, I did. And I mean it. Oh come on, I...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

I should have edited the quote better, my mistake.

I was responding to:
"The problem is that the murders of black people are taken less seriously than white people, across the board."
I'd like...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

You started off talking about how "BLM was founded to confront police violence against black people". I was questioning what that had to do with a case that didn't involve any police violence. This...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Might want to check your math there.

Evidence that this is true?

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Aubrey wasn't killed by the police, so I'm not sure I follow your reasoning there.

Setting that aside, I agree that (perceived? proven?) racism this is the reason why this case went viral. This is...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Eh, maybe. I think the idea that there are "deep flaws" in the US justice system is questionable. It's not perfect (no country's legal system is perfect) but I don't agree that it's "deeply flawed"....

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

I'd like to see this evidence. Also, normalizing across all of the situations that can result in a murder to make them comparable is extremely difficult if not impossible.

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

The one-sidedness of the posting here needs some context. People are sadly murdered every day in the US and the fixation on this case seems politically motivated. The blanket coverage of the Aubery...

Re: WTF Murders/Killings in the US

Of course some people "live in fear" whether justified or not. I also hesitate the prevalence of gun ownership to "living in fear", there are many reasons why people own guns.

Regardless, I was...

Re: WTF Murders/Killings in the US

This is definitely a thing, but it's also definitely a subculture and again hardly representative of the entire US. Also, shooting guns at a range is FUN. This is a major why lots of people own guns.

Re: WTF Murders/Killings in the US

Where did you live, East St. Louis? This is hardly a common experience in most of the US. Most people don't have "men hopping the fence" in their backyard or armed police in their alleyway and it's...

Re: WTF Murders/Killings in the US

Are you serious? Do you honestly believe that 325+MM people live in fear? Is this what people in Adelaide actually believe is going on in the US? It's telling that you're even asking this question.

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Not sure why you're trying to shut down this discussion, I think this is 100% relevant. At the heart of the debate around BLM is the role of law enforcement. The linkage between crime levels and law...

Re: Pandemic Burnout

I think you need to have a mindset shift. I don't believe this is ever going to be "over". Covid will become an endemic virus, it will continue to mutate and spew out new variants for the rest of...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Setting aside the ever-ascending murder rate in Chicago, the feeling of lawlessness in the city has been palpable in recent months. Smash-and-grab, armed robbery, general violence have all increased...

Re: Enter the Wokeness

Totally agree. A recent Freakonomics Radio podcast episode made some very salient points along these lines:

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

Try harder. There's a big difference between my rolling my eyes at your armchair philosophizing about the "frontier mentality of Americans" and denying that there's a gun violence issue in the US....

They did ask him. In court. Because he's alive. Also he said that Rittenhouse didn't point his rifle at him until he pointed his Glock at Rittenhouse. Which was actually presented on video, again in...

Re: The Black Lives Matter movement

The gun was unlicensed and being illegally carried concealed. Irrelevant to the facts of this case, but still ironic.

Careful, interjecting firearms knowledge is clear evidence that you are...

Of course, there's that pesky detail of one of these guys pointing a loaded Glock at Rittenhouse.
