Sorry..I have just re read your question...and have realised that I have misinterpreted it completely! You say you activated it in March 2007...which means you must have entered NZ in March...

So correct me if i'm wrong....but it sounds like my only option will be the following.....
Leave NZ in Feb/Mar as planned.... having the original returning visa in passport....valid till 4th Aug....
