Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Despite being the second largest country in the world, buildable land in Canada is made scarce by government policy and political pressure. Land is locked away by crown land and ALR/Greenbelt, zoning...

ChitChats - Cheaper shipping option to the UK

Just wanted to share my recent experience with ChitChats (https://chitchats.com/) for the first time today. They are a shipping "middleman" company that offers discounted shipping compared to...

Re: Anyone still feel like an outsider?

The adult friends I’ve made are through shared interests and community groups, I mean people generally have to have a “reason” to hang out. When it’s friends from school there’s history and in-jokes,...

Re: Shall we start a cheese war?

Agree, the prices aren't too bad. I think a lot of people go to the deli cheese area when the good deals are the prepacked cheeses in the dairy section. That happened to my parents when they came and...

Re: Shall we start a cheese war?

The US has the gun lobby, Canada has the dairy lobby.

Personally I don’t have a problem with cheese in Canada. The president’s choice cheeses aren’t bad at all. One of my favourites is the PC...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Some people really did lose their minds:

Bought a house in Sudbury, sight unseen. Ended up with a wreck.

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Actually more pointing the finger at the political class and media bias. I'm not a fan of Peterson and I was pleasantly surprised by the discussion. Of course, keep those critical thinking skills...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

More than just housing discussed here, but I quite enjoyed this discussion between Jordan Peterson and Pierre Poilievre on housing and other issues facing Canada and kind of the root causes behind...

Re: Job Offer in Nova Scotia - Looking for Brutal Honesty

I agree that Canada is a lot more ideologically driven politically. With the Conservatives in charge, they deny climate change and silence scientists. With the Liberals' in charge, they demonize...

Re: Elections Bill

Not sure how to feel about this, my life is in Canada, I don't think I have a right to have a say in how the UK governs itself. But best of luck with the pension thing.

Re: ETA with criminal record

It sucks, but think of it from a political perspective, Canada can't be seen to allow violent criminals into the country. If they let him in knowing his record and he went on to assault a Canadian,...

Re: Building a 2nd house in the backyard and sell it?

Some cities do allow what are known as ADUs or Accessory Dwelling Units, these don't require subdividing the lot to construct a second house on the property and are relatively easy to get approval...

Re: Becoming a Senior

Back in March 2021, my wife and MIL applied for CPP for at the time (which got approved quite quickly) but OAS got missed so I got the ball rolling on that one. They did do a back payment all the way...

Re: Becoming a Senior

Yeah I had to do my father-in-law's OAS. Applied back in September last year, wasn't until March this year I got any sort of confirmation. Very slow process.

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

Keep an eye on that Pierre Poilievre fellow, he's probably the biggest chance the conservatives have of winning if he becomes the party leader. He is the only politician talking passionately about...

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

To be fair what he meant was if you stimulate the economy and growth with investment like more infrastructure then the tax base grows and a deficit budget becomes worthwhile in the long run.

That...

Re: Liberal NDP coalition

I think this is true. It is quite evidently self serving despite the claims they are promoting "stability". I'm just hoping some good comes out of it.

Re: Banking - HSBC or RBC?

Where are you moving to? I would recommend taking a look at the credit unions that operate in the area. They are just the same as banks but usually don't charge any monthly fees like the big banks...

Re: Filling out Citizen Application will GCSE grade be accepted?

UK school leaving age was raised to 17 in 2013 and 18 in 2015, so now it is comparable. It's actually longer now as school starts for 4 years old in the UK compared to 5 in the US and Canada. Depends...

Re: Filling out Citizen Application will GCSE grade be accepted?

Should be, GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education, and the proof of language can be Secondary education.

Re: Good riddance (EA and all that) !

The Canadian press is in such a sorry state that isn't really surprising. Canadian media rarely actually does any analysis of an issue or situation, usually just quotes and paraphrases experts (who...
