Re: Tax allowance - Part Year

Definitely one for a specialist - not sure you will be able to file as Head of Househokd Household after only 3 months in the US, and meet the requirement to have provided at least 6 months of...

Re: School vaccinations specifically Hep B

Ah no, he’ll need the usual three then.

The fast track schedule may cause you problems. Not having them at the expected CDC intervals is considered the same as not having them. One of my kids’...

Re: Starting from scratch at 35, anyone else ever done it for felt the same?

You’re doing great! We moved to Switzerland in our mid-30s with very little in the way of assets to our name as we’d been a one income family in the UK. Built up some pensions and so on there - no...

Re: School vaccinations specifically Hep B

If your son is somewhere in the ages 11-15 range, inclusive, then there’s a separate Hep B vaccination protocol for adolescents. This protocol only requires two vaccinations for full coverage.

Re: British to US school

Assuming the visa/ citizenship is sorted out, your next challenge will likely be that the school district will insist that school registration can only be done using the address of a designated...

Re: Reaching IRA contribution limit...what to do next?

You would owe tax on any dividends paid out during the year. You wouldn’t owe tax on any* capital gains until you realized them by selling the increased value investments.

*there is usually a...

Re: Drug Screen and Background Check - L1 visa

A previous employer (large multinational) offered health insurance at two premium rates: non tobacco users, and those who admitted to using tobacco OR refused to take the annual ‘optional’ physical...

Re: Update GC at 14

My daughter had her biometrics appointment this week, about a month after the application went in. And now we no doubt wait maaaaany months for the actual card.

Child Permanent Resident turning 14? You need a new GC, pronto

Regular Public Service Announcement, since I’ve just done this for Child Number Two.

If you have a child with a green card who will soon be turning 14, and their GC won’t expire until after their...

Re: What ever happened to .... ? (the missing BE member thread)

Oh, how the gods love to mock us when we try to make plans. Hubby got laid off today. Chances of him finding a local job are 0.00001%, so he’s looking at a relocation anywhere in the US.

Re: What ever happened to .... ? (the missing BE member thread)

It is, isn’t it! I was fine with the companionable roommates situation until I unexpectedly* found myself in a potential new relationship, and had a sudden epiphany of ‘ohhh... THIS is how it’s...

Re: Annual leave / vacation time US

Probably best to assume vacation/ personal time won’t be negotiable, at least not for your first US job. Maybe more so if the second job headhunts you.

I’ve not heard of medical cover/ health...

Re: What ever happened to .... ? (the missing BE member thread)

Hello! How kind of you to think of and ask after me.

Yes, as PF says I’ve been having a busy 2017. My husband and I are in the process of separating, as of May 2017. Nothing sensational, just a...

Re: Over 55. Can I withdraw a UK private pension directly?

It will likely depend on the terms of your plan. Hubby has a pension in the UK (old employer, money purchase rather than final salary) which only allows claimants to annuitize. If they want to take...

Re: Time of year for new medical plan enrollments...

I know, is crazy good. Previous employer insurance was around $550 a month with a much bigger deductible.

This company also has a generous 401k match where every dollar is matched with 50c, so...

Re: Time of year for new medical plan enrollments...

Our HSA HD plan continues to be free for us, along with free dental and vision. Deductible has gone up from $2.6k to $3k, which is still reasonable. Employer puts $1k a year in the HSA.

Re: Bank account

Chase opened us a bank account using a work address, on the employment offer letter, and used that one to mail out cards, etc. Once we had a lease a couple of weeks later, they switched it over.

Re: Class Rank reporting stopped at my kids high school!

RIC does seem to be a fairly meaningless, easily manipulated system. My son goes to a normal suburban high school (gets 7/10 on Great Schools sort of place). He's arguably more than averagely bright...

Re: Update GC at 14

I luckily read about the age 14 GC thing on here about two weeks after my son had turned 14. Luckily, because there is a 30 day post-birthday window during which there's a smallish admin charge,...

Re: Temporary residency for school registration

When we changed states from AZ to OH, we were able to use a hotel as our address by showing a room receipt. If it is in the boundary, and is - at that time - genuinely your only 'home' (easy to prove...

Re: To 401k or not 401k

Hubby's employer matches at 52c on the dollar. So when we put in the full $18k, we immediately make a little over $9k on it. Add in the tax savings on the 18k at a fairly high marginal rate, and...

Re: Renewing British Passport from the USA

My kids' pics were taken on the usual US white background, and then the photo staff ever so slightly darkened them so they appeared an off-white; very light grey-ish. Passports went through no...
