if air quality is an issue you might want to check out some of the air quality studies - generally the further from the coast you go the worse it gets: Mapping Los Angeles's Better But Still Terrible...

I'm in Ladera Heights - the Pavilions in the Marina would be perfect, that's 3 minutes down the 90 and I'm there! I'll go have a look-see tonight!

yep - schools are a big one here. Sounds like the OP doesn't have kids to consider, so that really opens up a lot more on the west side. Getting a nice place on the west side with a good school...

personally, unless you're a big fan of very hot weather (32oC+), I think you should be looking in West LA/Beverly Wood/Culver City areas - areas basically around 10miles west of down town LA. I know...
