Re: Tax residency in the British Virgin Islands

This thread deserves a lot more attention than the miserly amount it's received so far! Yours was a fair question, Zigzag, and you have some very useful comments to think about. uk_grenada reminded...

Re: Republic

In my observation, it's always a mistake to shrug off the UK connection for purely nationalistic reasons. Bahamas is the classic example. (We lived there 1967-70.) Vanuatu is another (1972-75)....

Re: Haiti

Graham Greene felt frightened in Haiti in Papa Doc's time because he (GG) was writing a critical book. I spent a week there in 1966 as a backpacking tourist, and found it peaceful and very friendly -...

Re: Medical Cannabis Oil in Cayman

https://caymannewsservice.com/2020/08/doctors-put-medical-cannabis-back-on-the-shelf/
This is not an advertisement of any kind - simply an update on the availability of medical cannabis in Cayman. I...

Re: This bug - its costs and some scary predictions

This was post #10 of this thread. Grenada, I apologise for not commenting before now. I didn't mean to be rude; I just don't get to BE much these days. To answer your question... I don't know whether...

Re: The Virus

Thanks for your kind thought, BEVS. I would explain in a PM to you and you alone, but not otherwise. (I don't know how to send a PM, except as a response.)

The latest report is that Cayman has put its opening back another month, until 1st October.

Re: WORDS

More likely, it's just a variation of English "John", Celtic/Germanic "Jan", etc - or vice versa, of course. Most names don't have meanings; folk etymology assigns them meanings, but they're really...

Re: Book corner - What are you reading, and Why?

I'm re-reading some of PG Wodehouse's little books. So clever, so simple, so escapist, so funny. Anybody else doing that?

Re: biographies

Yes, up to a point. I didn't release my wife's obit to the local newspapers or anything; it was printed only in the program for her Memorial Service, so the attendees would have all taken a copy home...

Re: How "Australian" do you feel.

I was born and bred in Oz, and left in 1963 at the age of 23 to see the world before settling down. Married an Aussie girl in Canada, but we never went back except for visits. We became permanent...

Re: WORDS

It's fun finding out stuff like that. I looked up the etymology of "quarantine". We have it lucky these days when they only lock us up for 14 days!

Re: Cayman's traffic congestion

When I was a kid, if we had a cold or anything like that we were encouraged to swim in the sea. And it did help cure us!

Re: This bug - its costs and some scary predictions

It seems to me a pity that Grenada didn't ever go after the tax-haven business. It's what is helping Cayman (and BVI and TCI too) survive economically, when tourism is dead - or dead in the water, at...

Thanks, Mac. Well, that takes care of that problem! I've changed my Profile to add an s to the http. It hasn't registered yet, so I guess it takes a couple of days for the change to be made. You're...

Re: biographies

OK, thanks. I value your opinion. All the same... My wife's obit was about 1200 words, and I had to add another 300 of my own for basic stuff she'd missed out. 1500 words divided by 80, that's an...

My wife and I began as Australian expats and ended up as British expats when the UK gave citizenship to all its colonials in 2003. She and I met in 1964 at a hostel in Greece, travelled together for...

Re: The Virus

It's nice to be able to report that one segment of the population is taking lockdown in its stride. That segment is mine. We old codgers find house-arrest to be a piece of cake. We weren't going...

Re: Cayman's traffic congestion

Yes, diving allowed from next week some day, I think. So many stupid regulations imposed with zero logic. We could swim in the sea but not lie on the beach??!! Reason: one person lying on the beach...

I only ever went to Bulgaria once in my life - driving my VW Beetle in 1965, on our way north behind The Iron Curtain. 47 years later, I wrote up the experience of getting out of the country, in my...

I've just been reading your earlier posts in this Forum. That was amazingly adventurous of you to work in Bulgaria - without, I assume, in the beginning not even speaking the language. As for having...
