Re: Remote Working

Ditto the above on using one of the new generation of app-based UK banks.

I use Starling in Argentina, Paraguay and elsewhere, and they have been excellent. No overseas fees, interest on your...

Re: Doha Qatar

Qatar's like Marmite - some like it, some won't touch it - as DXBtoDOH says. As a shortish-term place for a couple of years, I don't mind it. It's fairly small and limited, but it's a place to earn...

Re: Moving to Ajman or Sharjah in UAE

Ajman's good if you prefer your backstreets unpaved with builder's rubble, tab ends and bits of rebar.

Re: Income tax query

Correct. The automatic non-resident test is less than 16 days in the tax year, rising to less than 46 days once you've spent 3 full tax years as a non-resident. (The other automatic non-resident test...

Dubai to Doha

I am very worried about fellow member DXBtoDOH. The police here have no record of him anywhere.

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

For those in the know, you get the golf cart from the car park lobby (or Al Qassar station) under the road, directly to the park. For a know-it-all, that's one thing you didn't know! I bet you're a...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

Doha Metro Section 1 is up and running. It runs from Al Wakra to Al Qassar. Al Qassar is good for the family park and beach plus for the entertainment, restaurant and bar options in Katara. Doha...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

You do get compounds in Doha, no worries and some excellent, but they're more Dubai style than Saudi, i.e. good places for kids to grow up and ride around on their bikes with their mates, but no...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

Well, apart from all the bars in the Kempinski, St Regis and InterCon. I appreciate that you're off the pace.

Of course I do, why do you think I posted half the shyte I did above. Do you? If...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

That's another good point about Al Sadd. The place is that soulless that it will cost you a fortune in Uber trips to The Pearl, Katara and West Bay, to drink inflated-priced pints, just to keep sane....

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

Or possibly a zip line from the top of Rail Tower to the Corniche then a jet ski. I hear Karwa now operate a service directly onto the private beach at the Hilton, handy for picking up take-away...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

Exactly, that whole beige set of backstreets with its dust, cheap tailors, unsanitary fried chicken shops and rubbish skips. Buildings no worse than West Bay? Once you get past the newer residential...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

I wouldn't live in Al Sadd if they paid me £100,000 a year on top, never mind saving ten. I'd probably end up leaving the place thinking Qatar was a shithole. End of the day, we all pays our...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

Hadn't spotted a Thai joint down Al Jazeera Street, need to check it out. Plenty of good dodgy Indian/shawarma places and the Korean joint's still there, plus a Pinoy place as I recall. There's a...

Re: Qatar Living Costs (what do you budget?)

I couldn't think of many things worse as a Western expat than living in Al Sadd when you can live in West Bay these days for not much more. The small difference in cost buys a lot of sanity and a...

Re: Saudi offer

I think that's exactly the right decision. When you factor in what you said for accommodation etc you're looking at around 45k a month all in. For your first job in the ME, mid-level, with 10 years...

Re: How is everyone holding up?

Rail industry is booming in Qatar and Saudi. Can't get enough people and staff retention a problem. New projects kicking off in Bahrain and UAE also. Good industry to be in in this part of the world...

Re: Saudi offer

FLOW Consortium, Riyadh Metro Lines 3/4/5/6 O&M, have been struggling to get people. Could be worth dropping your CV to them as well.

Re: Saudi offer

Good luck Tahir. Definitely good to get some initial ME rail experience on your CV. It will open doors to juicer opportunities later, plenty happening in the region.

Re: Duty free alcohol allowance-Dubai

I once asked a customs officer at DXB how much I could bring through, and he said, "We don't care."

No guarantee you'll get the same bloke of course.

Re: Qatar win 2019 AFC

1.5 hours on Friday night to get from the Hilton to The Pearl. You'd walk it far quicker. Streets were jammed, flags and firearms out.

It's been dead over Christmas. Went in Tahitian Village one Saturday and we were the only table in.

Re: Qatar introduces 100% sin tax on Alcohol & pork

Getting it in is the problem.

Sainsbury's pork loins are easier with a roll of Best British Beef stickers.
