Re: Shipping BACK to the UK.

Hi G1ant,
I moved back - also from Texas.
Not sure I would categorize it as "gave up" exactly, it was just that "the adventure" had run it's course (15 years).
To answer your question, we found it...

LocalPhone have guides on how to set up most SIP boxes.
PM me and I'll screenshot my setup pages and send them to you if you want to give it a try...
It was pretty easy. They also have an Android...

Re: International calling with SIP - need techy help!

I use LocalPhone (www.localphone.com).
Right now I use it the other way around to you, I have a Texas number (where I used to live) for my US-based kids to phone us on cell phones etc and a UK...

Re: Anyone near Chichester?

In rush hour getting from one side of Chichester to the other (never mind out lying commu nities!) is going to exceed 30 minutes. Traffic is pretty dire all around there.
However it is a lovely...

Re: Health Care

Pete,
We've had multiple threads on the healthcare costs and differences from the NHS-type system that may be worth searching (I've started a couple of them!).

But, for what it's worth, here's...

Re: Came home and renounced US citizenship - "Final" tax return sanity check.

Yes that would be interesting.
The worst part for me is that I really didn't want to lose my US citizenship.
I would have nothing particularly to "gain" per se for retaining it (apart from visits...

Re: Came home and renounced US citizenship - "Final" tax return sanity check.

My reasons were exactly in line with Nun.
Whilst we were in the US having citizenship made perfect sense.
It simply made things easier and although not required for my job, it (literally) opened...

Re: Came home and renounced US citizenship - "Final" tax return sanity check.

Thanks theOAP.
Your detailed explanation finally made sense of it all, and bizarrely you are only one day out on your expatriate on date!
I did have US earnings up to leaving the US and none...

Re: Came home and renounced US citizenship - "Final" tax return sanity check.

Hmmm...
My understanding based on all the literature I have read is that the filing status is based on what I was on December 31st of last year - IE an "alien" and the decision of whether to file a...

Came home and renounced US citizenship - "Final" tax return sanity check.

I have read at least 3 internet's worth of information on this subject but I just want a sanity check!

I was a US citizen for 6 years, living in Texas for 15 years total.
I returned home to the...

Re: The 13 year adventure is (almost) over.

Well, it looks like it!
We signed up on a 1 year rental in MK yesterday.
Now to get my head around what has changed over 13 years in:

Electric supply
Gas Supply
Broadband and phone

I...

Re: The 13 year adventure is (almost) over.

Hi Bella,
I have to say that it's a little premature for my answer since we've only really just beaten the jet-lag!

To answer the simple questions:

The dog did fine. My wife picked him up from...

Re: Cost of container from US (SF) to UK (London)?

Yes you are allowed to load and seal the container yourself.
You supply a very detailed list of each package, box etc.
Customs may open it if they are suspicious of anything (in which case you know...

Re: Cost of container from US (SF) to UK (London)?

A 20ft self load container door to door from Texas to Milton Keynes cost us around $5,300 with UpackWeship.

The 13 year adventure is (almost) over.

Apologies in advance for what will likely be a long post.
Some of the detail in here will surely be useful to someone else contemplating "the move back" - the simple logistics of moving your life...

Re: Flights booked!

Just one "Golden Retriever size" dog.
He's actually a Golden Doodle but everyone thinks he's a regular Golden.

I figured the "money talks" thing and I guess a year in advance is do-able.

Did you have any problems finding a rental that would take the dogs?
It's another one of those "worries" that concerns us about the move back.
We won't be able to buy for several months so need to...
