The initial question is very odd:

There is nothing nefarious about this, it's just that if I don't have a tax residency, my existing country of Australia may feel entitled to claim my tax...

Valuation requirement by the insurance depends which cover you are taking. Third party only nothing required, however if you want full coverage the insurance wants to know what the value is per year....

You could also use a DNS service. Your IP address changes and by doing so you can use USA Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc. Just look around what works best for yourself.

Yep sounds good, go together for a week. Set up some meetings with tax advisors, tour the island, see some houses. After that it all depends on the (relocation) package offered.

Moving by yourself not a big issue, if any family or school going kids are involved well......;)

Cayman, close to USA, Jamaica, and in the hurricane belt
Barbados, only 8 hours to the UK, 4 hours...
