Re: 2020 Election

I don't vote on most of the propositions. Too much to study. I don't know how people manage to vote on all of them.

I suspect many people decide based on ads and how it's presented rather than the...

Re: Class 2 NI abolished. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributio

I've never received a call regarding NI, but I did get a call one morning around 8 AM in response to a query I'd made regarding OAP.

Re: 2020 Election

A funny one for me was this: "Biden may have social-distancing issues of a pre-pandemic, post-#MeToo sort."

Re: Fires in California

I don't know, but considering that pollution in London in the 1960s was, or at least felt, much worse, and people have generally survived that, I don't worry about this wood smoke. I very much doubt...

Re: Medicare time!

It's confusing enough without getting the names wrong! Supplement plans are also known as Medigap (not part F). (Plan F is one of several Medigap plans, which I think is being phased out)

Re: retirement and planning for it

I only have a low retirement income, which goes up with inflation, etc, so I decided to sell part of my stock and buy a deferred annuity indexed to inflation. But when I looked at an annuity website...

Re: Wanting to move to California - what can I do there?

No, the OP just asked for information regarding employment in California, and for some reason some posters started bashing and painting a false picture of California, so others rightly replied to...

Re: Planespotting II

LA and the Bay Area have large populations, and if public transport in cities is improved, I think the line will work, as people will no longer think I'm going to need a car anyway so I might as well...

Re: 2020 Election

Because what she's saying is true. It's all water under the bridge, there's no point in discussing it now, but she's explaining how, instead of what could and should have been, many people, like her,...

Re: Why are Americans giving up their citizenship at record numbers?

I think it's mostly because of having to file a tax return every year.

Re: 1031 Exchange on UK property

According to what a CPA once told me, eg suppose you lived there 2 years before selling, and had rented out for 8 years, you'd only get a 20% exemption (2/(2+8) x $500,000). You'd also have to pay...

Re: WEP question for Social Security

Yes that's right- I phoned SS and told them that I'd just started to receive a foreign pension and they told me to send a copy of the pension award letter which I did, and they wrote back telling me...

Re: Landlord eviction due to selling property (California)

A landlord has no right to play around with a tenant like this. Unless he has an exceptional reason and offers considerable compensation I wouldn't go along with this.

Re: Gizza Job

Sounds like their count system works quite well. In some stores the count on the scanner is often wrong, it shows a count when there aren't any of the item, or it shows zero (or negative!) when they...

Re: Planespotting II

So it looks like fighter pilots will be replaced by drone operators. And maybe soldiers generally will be replaced by robot operators.

Re: 2020 Election

Yes polls need to be improved on, but I doubt if looking at exit poll methods will help, as they're quite different and based on actual votes.

Re: 2020 Election

Yes it's a miserable state, but we should be grateful as it could've been worse. Imagine if universities were free, or if everyone could go to the doctor and pay nothing, like the NHS, if Sanders...
