Re: HSBC expat banking

Bazzer
I can't remember - are you still officially resident in the UK? If so, I would leave my sterling there. Indeed I would even open a few more UK bank accounts while I still had the chance....

Re: French Tax return time

You may have read it in Connexion magazine because they certainly recommend starting with the ancillary forms and then coming back to the main tax form 2042 at the end.
I did mine a few weeks ago. I...

Re: French Immobilière. A warning

I'm currently trying to buy a house in Northern Ireland and it's the usual shenanigans. They'll tell you anything to lure you into a bidding war. But you can play them at their own game. For example...

Re: Finances - where to home my hard-earned!

I don't think there's any hassle-free, risk-free option in France, Bazzer.
Which is precisely why I bought a couple of rentals in the UK and placed them with an excellent letting agent on a...

Re: Identifying an Accountant - Expat Tax return

Good morning
It sounds like your tax affairs are very straightforward so you could probably do the return yourself with the help of the latest Connexion magazine tax guide and this forum.
I think...

Re: Tips on preparing to move home

Like you, Spouse of Scouse, I have a bank account dating back from years ago. From my school days actually. It's just a current account but I'm grateful for it all the same.

The combination of...

Re: Tips on preparing to move home

Very canny move on your part! I don't know of a single bank that would do that now.

Re: Tips on preparing to move home

That’s quite an achievement. How did you manage to open UK bank accounts before moving to the country?

Re: Starling Bank

Good morning Lion

Do you have a very close family member in the UK who would be willing to put your name on one of their utility bills for a few months?
That's what I was planning on doing as,...

Re: Tips on preparing to move home

If you don't mind me asking, how did you solve the mobile phone problem in the end?
People have mentioned this issue before and I think some of them found a workaround but I can't remember what it...

Maybe you should get a sense of humour. And maybe Cirio should get a cat.

Re: Using a BB gun

Don't even think about it. The penalties are severe. 20 years for unlawful killing. More if aggravated by intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Re: E-file a zero AGI IRS return

Not sure how it works to be honest. I submit the return via the tax software and a few minutes later I get confirmation from HMRC that they’ve received it.

For someone who’s a complete techno...

Re: E-file a zero AGI IRS return

On a related subject, I filed my UK online tax return last week. Because I live abroad, I can't do it direct on the HMRC site and have to use commercial software. I use 1, 2, 3 efiling which has...

Re: Filling out a D1 to exchange my license back to a UK one

Clear as mud. Whoever designs these forms should be shot. Do they not test run the questions before putting them out there?

Hopefully someone who's already been through the procedure will come to...

Re: Moving back to scotland

Just bear in mind that Wise is not actually a bank and that, while regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, it's not covered by the government compensation scheme.
It's a great half-way house...

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

It certainly makes for some interesting conversations. I was chatting to a man last week. He had a small motor home and I was asking him about how easy it was to find places where you could stop...

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

It strikes me as remarkably easy now to offend ANYBODY in the UK. Which at least has the merit of making the Northern Irish look more normal.

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

Don't worry, no matter what you say in NI, you'll offend somebody. While working with a bunch of Catholics up the Falls Road, I inadvertently referred to "the mainland" and practically got lynched....

I don't know what the best deal is but I recently upgraded to fibre with Orange (from ADSL with SFR) and was very happy with the service.

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

We're on a hiding to nowhere, Pongo!
I've kind of given up explaining.
Just as I've given up trying to use Northern Irish banknotes in GB. Ah well.

Re: Moving to Northern Ireland

I can’t really understand why anyone would want to buy a house (for themselves, not just as a rental) without seeing it first. Especially when it’s so easy now to put your furniture in a self-storage...
