Well, I arrived in Toronto today. The guy at immigration didn't even look at my insurance or bank statement. It was a very quick process. I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone in this thread...

Thanks for your advice. It still doesn't quite make sense to me as I would be covered for 2 years and 1 week, and didn't have the intention of cancelling either policy if that option was workable....

The cheapest long stay insurance with Alpha Travel Insurance - Simple & Straightforward Cover (http://www.alphatravelinsurance.co.uk/) is £310 if that helps. I haven't been able to find any cheaper.
