Re: how is online schooling going?

That reminds me of the communications we had from our district in spring, not wanting to put too much extra stress on students and parents, though the "you don't need to bother" message that sent was...

Re: how is online schooling going?

So, Anchorage School District have now changed their minds. They plan to have the kids go back to full-time in-person school with masks and social distancing (can't imagine how that will work) with...

Re: UK passport photos in Massachusetts

This is the website I have bookmarked, though there are others. It's a lot cheaper to take your own picture, have it printed at CVS or similar, and cut it out yourself.

Re: how is online schooling going?

Anchorage school district started on Thursday. This year we have one in 6th grade (elementary school here), 8th (middle) and 11th (high). At least none of them have changed schools.

The school...

Re: UK Final salary pension transfer

Your best bet is to do a search on the USA forum here for QROPS. It's been too long for me to remember the details, but the usual advice is to never transfer. It makes plenty of money for the company...

Re: How Isolated is everyone right now?

Alaska is doing better than some. 59 cases as of this evening, with 28 in the Anchorage metro. No deaths in state, but apparently we get to include an Alaskan resident who died in Seattle. It's only...

Re: Free Bank Account for L2 Spouse?

PF - We use Advancial, since we were with Chase before but they don't have branches in Alaska. We're happy enough with them, but they only have branches in Texas, Oklahoma and Alaska. Possibly also...

Re: US Tax Returns

Google tells me that a 1042-S form is for a foreign person's tax withholding.

This means 1. They think you're not a US taxpayer, and 2. They have therefore withheld the percentage required by law...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

Tax rates can certainly change, it's a good point, but it would take a huge increase in tax for me to have a bigger marginal rate in retirement.

You said it's a "non-issue", which is the opposite...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

If I decided to convert all of my pre-tax 401k to a Roth IRA this year, I'd have to pay income taxes on that conversion at my marginal rate. Assuming $300k at 32%, that's about $100k in taxes. I...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

But I don't need thousands of funds, and, arguably, neither does anyone else. Plus the ones available to me have better expense ratios than the equivalent in an IRA.

Not sure if you're joking, or...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

Institutional funds are only available to institutions. They are never included in IRAs.

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

Then I didn't misunderstand you. Yes, you would have access to more funds by rolling over to an IRA, unless your 401k has a self-directed brokerage option, which most do not. No, you will not...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

None of the 401ks for which I know the details have any additional fees or reduced investments for former employees. There are still plenty of really bad 401k plans out there, but many of them are...

Re: New Expat - Saving/Retirement Considerations

That depends on the 401k program fees and available funds, but your statement hasn't been "generally" true for about 15 or 20 years. These days, most employer 401ks are better than a personal IRA,...

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like it was a big mistake, but at least you now have a better idea of what you do want to do and where you want to be.

Re: new car suggestions for first time in the US

Not sure who it's relevant for, but in the last couple of months, Costco has moved to only fitting tires that have been bought at Costco. Not an issue if you're just buying to replace old ones, but...

Re: Moving from Glasgow, Scotland to Charleston SC

I figure a couple of your points need comment.

Is this based on your experience in Kentucky? I've never heard of such a thing, and it looks like there aren't separate county and state DMV offices...

That seems to be an apple pie with "Mince Pie" written on it so that Americans won't buy it. Maybe it's a secret patriotism test?

Re: Terminated from job in US on a temporary assignment

I don't think that's the document I'm asking about. There would normally be a relocation agreement. If nothing else, companies do this to protect themselves in case the transferred employee leaves...

What is in your relocation agreement or contract?

Not completely sure about question a), though I suspect the answer is no. However, for question b), it depends on your relocation agreement. It's...

What sort of ISA, and what does it actually hold? Cash or stocks and shares, or unit trusts?

US taxation (the IRS) doesn't recognise ISAs as tax-free. It ignores the ISA wrapper and taxes the...

Re: Trying to buy land in America, hopefully Arizona.

Am I the only one here who thinks there's a big risk of one, not be awarded the B-2 visa, and two, being considered an overstay risk and turned away at the port of entry even with a B-2?

Re: Visiting the SSA after citizenship (also GE)

That is interesting. I went in to the Anchorage office on Tuesday. Waited around for half an hour (better than usual, by all accounts). When the clerk saw my current SS card, she said she wouldn't...
