This is Canada - not the US... but yes, trades can earn good money - however, there is quite a lot involved to get Provincially Certified (they are all regulated professions in Canada). :)

Umm not necessarily so.. to the best of my knowledge for Canada Immigration spousal sponsorship purposes - as long as they are residing together 'as if married' for a minimum of 12 consecutive months...
