You don't even need to be employed to maintain PR status just have to ensure you maintain the residency obligation of 730 days in each 5 year rolling period.

Where was the Canadian citizen born? If born in Canada then yes your children are probably citizens of Canada as well if they haven't been registered or applied for proof of citizenship IMHO legally...
