Re: Cricket

Excellent photo. A quick Google brings up the Getty library source with a caption listing the England team celebrating Underwood's dismissal of John Inverarity at The Oval in 1968. From L to R:...

Re: Cricket

Reminded me more of Chris Tavaré, who played the stubborn, plodding foil to Botham's exuberance through the 1981 series. A properly old-school No 3 bat, there to build an innings and hold and end...

Re: Cricket

I missed the action on Sunday (just too much to watch on a lovely sunny day - what with Wimbledon, the Grand Prix and the Bastille Day stage of Le Tour - and the backyard beckoning strongly) but,...

Re: Cricket

just catching up on the reports. That looks like it was a proper thrashing. Well played England.

Can they do the same to the Kiwis?

Re: Cricket

Oh dear indeed. Pakistan 350 for 8 in reply after the second day. Can you say "innings defeat?"

Re: Cricket

Don't have a good feed at work, so relying on cricinfo text commentary for the second test, but the England batting is looking a little bit collapsible today, in between the raindrops. Westley and...

Re: Cricket

That was splendidly silly. The curse of Nelson got me while I was eating my lunchtime sandwich - caught out by a long-hop on 111.

A bit distracted by the text commentary, though. A good game...

Re: Cricket

bit of a wobbly start to England's reply today. Roy, Hales and Root all not really getting properly started - 30 for Root is hardly even playing himself in these days.

Re: Cricket

Well, that's as maybe, but it's not a proper pursuit for an Englishman, really, is it?

If you need to have a fix of 80 minutes or so of full-contact sport, then watch a game of Rugby. No...

Re: Cricket

Interesting first day's play in the fourth Test. SA built a good opening, had a bit of a wobble, but Bavuma and de Cock look like they've settled in and could still bat England out of the game...

Re: Cricket

Oh, neither am I, at least not intentionally. I hope the record stands as valid and he occupies his corner of Wisden for many years to come! I did like the turn of phrase the Graun piece used when...

Re: Cricket

The leagues might not, but sure as eggs is eggs, the players do (although any two of them rarely agree what that score actually is at any point beyond about 1-0).

Under the Ontario Soccer...

Re: Cricket

well, yes. I hadn't read the full report (the Grauniad has a rather good writeup) so didn't appreciate that it was effectively an U16 team playing against U14 opposition. Quite why the coach of the...

Re: Cricket

I saw that on the BBC earlier. Poor old Tejas Misar - how the hell do you get hit for nearly 24 an over through six overs? Mind you, his colleagues didn't fare much better - only the two opening...

Re: Cricket

A draw, you say? I don't think there's much chance of anything else, now.

Does SA's declaration, two runs short of England's hefty first-innings score, diminish the impact of Ben Stokes' runfest...

Re: Cricket

Splendid indeed. I was trying to explain to my 6-year-old, asd he kept interrupting the dulcet tones of the TMS team's meanderings on iPlayer, how a team can be 600-odd runs to the good but "you...

Re: Cricket

Now this is a little more promising.

Bit disappointed that (a) Cook didn't enforce the follow-on, and (b) didn't declare an over or two earlier to get India back in before tea. Still, they have...

Re: Cricket

Nice partnership from Root & Prior. Ton-up for Joe Root and a solid half from Matt Prior should boost confidence and steady nerves a little. From the text commentary the Sri Lankan attack seems to...

Re: Cricket

things are looking a bit more promising... well, I say looking, I don't know what they look like, but the BBC text commentary is a bit more encouraging than it was at lunchtime.
