Re: UK US Difference

I took a safe driving course recently to get a discount on my car insurance, and one of the sections was about roundabouts, and had statistics showing that roundabouts are FAR safer than stop...

Re: Options for UK Pension (Defined Contribution)

I do not know what the rules are now, but a few years ago I wanted to transfer my UK pension to the US, but was unable to do so. But I was able to transfer it to a UK SIPP which had a lower fee...

Re: Children and IRS tax return

I think by "sons and daughters" they mean those over 21, so there's no wait for children under 21 for citizens.

Re: Best way to return to the US?

OK, not 100%, but it means in most cases that you will almost certainly get a visa whereas otherwise you would almost certainly not get one.

Re: Best way to return to the US?

Not so.

With a Green Card you get a visa, without one you don't.

(Without a Green Card or similar foreign residence they assume that you're trying to leave your country and emigrate and are not...

The correct name is neither of these- it's dustmen.

Re: WTF in America

It's been revealed that he jumped out because he got upset. He'd damaged the plane while trying to land. If you're going to get upset, it's better to get upset on the ground, where you can leave the...

Re: UK expat in the US - tax & reporting

It used to be possible to contribute for up to 5 years after leaving the UK. You paid around 2,800 pounds and 3,600 pounds went into your stakeholder pension. I don't know if it is still possible, or...

Re: Home and garden projects

It's the first time I've seen anything like this. I expect you have no problem with weeds, little or no problem with slugs, slightly less of a problem with pests, and no difference with birds? Nice...

Re: US / UK Citizen Tax while living in the UK

I sent it by ordinary post. I didn't receive confirmation. (but I know they received it). You may want proof of delivery, in which case you might look on the IRS site to see what they say.

Your...

Re: US / UK Citizen Tax while living in the UK

You should be able easily to file online. Many years ago in the UK I phoned the IRS and they told me to fill in paper forms 1040 and 2555-EZ and mail them, which I did, so you could just print out...

Re: UK Pensions and WEP

Yes, that's unfair- you've worked and paid taxes, and WEP is being applied to you, but not to those who haven't worked for it and have just paid a token 2 or 3 pounds a week "voluntary...

Re: What All Considering Becoming Expats Should Consider

Off topic, but I just want to mention that this is not really very impressive, given that he campaigned on "Medicare at 60".

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

What I expect you may be thinking of is the 4 annual SS credits; a few weeks of work in a year is unlikely to be enough to add anything for WEP exemption (the minimum earnings needed in 2022 is...

Re: California - departures and arrivals

Prop 13 may be one of the factors here- I've seen some houses bought years ago kept empty or used only occasionally.

Re: Maintaining Green Card for first year after receiving it

Given that you really do want to move to the US permanently in June 2023 you shouldn't have a problem. Make sure after leaving the US after getting your Green Card that you return within a year. I...

Re: wise.com fee increase

I transferred around 2,000 pounds to USD and the charge came to around 0.43% vs around 0.37% a couple of months ago. The exchange rate (nothing to do with Transferwise of course) was quite a bit...

Re: Transferring money from UK to US

I recommend using Wise.com (formerly Transferwise). It will cost you less than 0.4%. You can do a bank to bank transfer but it will cost you considerably more. There is no restriction on the amount...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

When I started contributing some years ago, if you didn't meet this (2), you could still contribute (but maybe at class 3 rate rather than class 2). I expect it is still the same.
