Re: School in Abu Dhabi: Cranleigh vs BSAK

BSAK is non-profit, with fees from 43k (FS1) to 70k (Year 13). Cranleigh's fees are 65k for FS1 up to 96k in Year 13. So 50% higher basically.

Re: School in Abu Dhabi: Cranleigh vs BSAK

Very few, if any, parents have kids who go or have been to both schools, so nobody is going to have an objective opinion on which one is better. So BSAK parents think BSAK is better, and Cranleigh...

Re: Buying/investing in UK as a UK Expat

I'm qualified to read T&Cs and see that these plans have egregious management expenses and uncompetitive lock-in periods.

Completely agree - and this is entirely possible, at low cost with zero...

Re: Buying/investing in UK as a UK Expat

The golden rules for expat financial planning:
1. Never sign up for an offshore regular savings or investment plan
2. Never accept advice from unsolicited cold call financial advisors
3. Take tax...

Re: Moving to Dubai - with a cat?!

Will this be an indoor cat or and indoor/outdoor cat? There are a lot of feral cats here, so outdoor cats get in scraps all the time. We have three cats and at any one time one of them is usually...

Re: Job offer

I'd check on the insurance - for me a "good" insurance basically covers everything including dental, with a broad network and no deductions. If you're British or live in the UK you might not be used...

Re: Job offer

- What level of medical insurance?
- Are school fees included in the 33k? This will typically be 5-8k per child per month
- Is housing included in the 33k?

Re: Job offer Abu Dhabi

Seems decent. Push for higher basic where you can as your final "pension payment" at end of service is calculated off basic, not total salary.

Education allowance is irrelevant if you have no...

Re: Moving to Abu Dhabi

I'm not sure that would be helpful - average monthly spends are a function of income and savings rates. Our household income is quite a bit higher than 27k/month so the average monthly spend is...

Re: Moving to Abu Dhabi

FWIW, we are a family of five and spent roughly 10k/month on groceries last year. But that is with liberal Spinneys and Waitrose. Cutting them out would probably have saved 20-30% off the bill.

Re: Electrician who knows anything about being an electrician? DXB

Yeah, isn't there a separate wiring run for these sorts of high-wattage appliances? Not sure you can just wire it into a standard socket.

Re: Managing a child's nut allergy in Abu Dhabi/UAE

BSAK is a nut-free school. Our kids are pro-nut so I can't say much else about day-to-day living with an allergy. Sheikh Khalifa Medical City is just up the road from BSAK and they have pediatric...

Re: Pfizer - Booster or Fully Vaccinated Dilemma

I agree, though something rankles me about incorrect or misleading statements being frozen "for ever" on the internet and thus potentially causing other people to be misled and make poor choices.

Re: Pfizer - Booster or Fully Vaccinated Dilemma

It's fairly simple: the vaccinated people who are in hospital are only 10% of the total number of cases amongst vaccinated people. Hence 90% protection against hospitalisation.

Re: Pfizer - Booster or Fully Vaccinated Dilemma

Unvaccinated people are somewhere between 3 and 15 times more likely to end up in hospital than the vaccinated (depending on age). Putting heavy pressure on people to vaccinate seems like a sensible...
